Secret Quest After Recruiting Clive

Clive's quest is a secret side quest in the game that is not marked, involving Clive and the NPC Elza. The quest itself consists of 8 cutscenes unlocked in certain locations in order as you play through the game.

Clear Easily With Stop Event Timer

Clive's Quest is heavily dependent on your gameplay time. If you fail to reach certain destinations before the target time, the quest will end.

However, in Suikoden 2 HD Remaster, a new feature allows you to stop the Event Timer fromt the Settings menu. Using this option ensures you can complete the quest without rushing through the game.

Clive's Quest Rewards

Clive's Quest is a fully optional sidequest and has no gameplay related rewards like exclusive new armor or items, other than obtaining a Sound Set at the start of the quest.

The main reward of completing Clive's Quest is learning more about Clive himself. Suikoden 2 HD Remaster also adds a trophy and achievement related to obtaining all of the Clive's Quest cutscenes.

During the knife throwing event in Ryube Village, if you move left or right, Eilie will hit you with one of her knives. You will take damage, but it ends the scene immediately, saving time.

Obtain a Double-Jab Rune

We highly recommend trying to farm a Double-Jab Rune orb from the Blade Bunny enemies in North Sparrow Pass. The Double-Jab Rune allows you to attack twice, making it one of the most powerful runes in the game. It is also hard to get at other points in the game.

When you return to the Mercenary Fort from Kyaro Town, the blacksmith and item shop will be unlocked.

If you have money to spare, you should upgrade your weapons. Prioritize the hero, but if possible, raise everyone's weapon to level 3.

After rescuing Pilika and escaping the Mercenary Fortress, the other three characters besides Jowy, the Hero, and Nanami will be randomly selected from your current roster.

Ideally, you'll want to get Tsai, Rikimaru, or Shiro, as they're all skilled in combat. If you receive other party members, consider reloading your game, as speed is critical and you will be unable to change your party for some time.

There are many treasure chests to collect in the expanse of the Sindar Ruins. Some places require you to solve puzzles before you can enter, but be sure to collect these as well.

At this time, it is also recommended to farm EXP and level up before taking on Double Head in the boss battle.

Save Before the War Event

After talking to Viktor at the inn, an Army Battle event will occur.

Make sure to save before commencing the battle so you can start over in case you die. Note that losing an army unit may affect the ending you'll get.

Speeding Up the Events in Muse

The flow of the events leading up to your escape from Muse changes depending on who you speak to. The quickest route to finish the event would be to talk to Nanami and select "Yeah...Good idea", which will cause you to go to bed immediately.

If you choose to be worried about Jowy, you'll have to go in front of the City Hall to look for him, taking up more time.

Part 4: South Window to Lakewest

Return to South Window to Restore HP/MP

After defeating the Celestial Sword boss in the Cave of the Wind, rest in South Window or Kuskus. This will allow you to clear inventory space and replenish your runes.

Sleep Immediately After the War Battle

After the war battle, Viktor will invite you to speak to him in the tavern at night when you get back to headquarters. You can choose to ignore this by sleeping instead to save time.

Part 5: Two River to Greenhill Forest

The series of events in Greenhill and the subsequent escape are far from convenient save points. Attempting to go to a save point will cause you to lose a lot of time, so do try to hold off on saves until you get back to headquarters after the event.

You can find the powerful Flowing Rune and Mother Earth Rune in the Rare Finds of the Gregminster Runemaster's shop. As the high-tier versions of the Water and Earth Runes, they have very powerful abilities and can make the boss battle against Luca Blight much easier.

You Can Re-enter Gregminster After Leaving

Completing the cutscenes in Gregminster will teleport you out, but talking to the gate guard (Varkas) will allow you to re-enter. Save at the inn after recruiting Lorelai to save time. Speak to Varkas again in front of the castle to return to Banner Pass.

No Need to Rescue Ridley in the War Battle

The War Battle near Radat Town will occur when you enter the Great Hall, but we recommend that you do not try hard to rescue Ridley's unit during the battle. Allowing Ridley to be defeated shortens the time you spend in battle and accelerates your progress to Clive's next event.

Ridley can't die permanently in this battle, so feel free to prioritize speed.

Efficient Preparations to Fight Luca

The battle against Luca Blight requires 18 characters ready for a fight, so it can be difficult to level them all up and give them good equipment. It can take a lot of time to gear them all up to optimal power. We recommend equipping as many characters as possible with the Lightning Rune, as it has high single-target damage that is useful against Luca.

Tinto Pass	・Return to Tinto Pass and recruit Georg Prime. Georg joins at level 60, making him an excellent party member. Return to headquarters afterward.
Headquarters	・Save outside the Great Hall and check your time (15 hours 20 minutes). ・You'll be attacked by Lucia. ・When asked how to proceed to the Battle for Greenhill, choose "I'll wait here." This will skip the war battles and save time. ・After the command sequence, you'll automatically move to the Greenhill Forest. ・Proceed through the forest and have another boss battle with Lucia before entering Greenhill City.
Greenhill City	・Head south and defeat the Bone Dragon boss. You'll return to headquarters after liberating the city. ▶How to Beat Bone Dragon
Headquarters	・Save and check your time before proceeding (15 hours and 50 minutes). ・ If you have extra time, consider recruiting more companions before liberating Muse. ・Choosing to liberate Muse transports you automatically to the Greenhill dormitory.
Greenhill City	・Follow Lucia when you spot her, then speak to Jowy. ・You'll enter a War Battle to liberate Muse.

Manage the Greenhill Battle From Headquarters

You'll have three options for dealing with the Battle for Greenhill. Two lead to Army Battles, while the third will keep you in the Great Hall at home, managing the battle by issuing orders. We recommend choosing the 3rd option because it is the safest and fastest way to resolve the battle.

However be careful when issuing orders, as there is a random chance for characters to be killed as a result.

Choose cautious actions instead of being overly aggressive, and all your units will pull through.

Save after defeating the Bone Dragon

Don't go straight to Muse after defeating the Bone Dragon, as choosing to go to Muse will kick off a long string of events and keep you from saving until the end of Part 9.

Additionally, take care during the boss fight, as being defeated will set you back a considerable amount of time.

Game Time: 16 hours 30 minutes
Headquarters and Greenhill	・This is your last chance to recruit more characters. ・Save and check your time (16 hours 30 minutes) ・Speak to Shu on the 4th floor and choose "We'll fight." to launch the invasion of Matilda. ・Speak to Apple to rearrange your troops, and prepare a combat party with Nanami. ・During the War Battle, the Highland Army will retreat after the third turn.
Rockaxe Castle	・Enter the Rockaxe Castle dungeon. ・Proceed through the dungeon and defeat the boss Gordeaux. ・You will return to Headquarters after the battle. ┗If time permits, revisit Rockaxe Castle after returning to Headquarters to collect the remaining treasure, which includes the powerful Thunder Rune. ▶How to Beat Gordeaux
Headquarters and Muse	・View the cutscene regarding Nanami's condition. ・Create a party with Clive and visit Muse. You will see a cutscene at the top of Jowston Hill. ・Return to Headquarters, then view cutscenes in the hall and on the 4th floor. ・**Save and check your time (17 hours and 30 minutes). ・In the Great Hall, agree to launch the invasion of L'Renouille.
Muse-Highland Checkpoint	・Fight the War Battle to attack L'Renouille. ・After the battle, Create a party with Clive and visit Sajah Village to the Northwest.
Sajah Village	・Enter Sajah Village for the final cutscene of Clive's Quest. Clive's Quest is now complete! ・ Save and check your time (18 hours).
L'Renouille	・Return to L'Renouille and complete Suikoden 2 normally.

If you're playing Suikoden 2 for the first time, it can be very difficult to fully complete Clive's Quest without stopping the even timer because earning every scene requires playing very efficiently and skipping key events.

We recommend stopping the event timer and playing normally the first time around and then earning the scenes at your own pace.

Change the Message Speed to Fast

After your first in-game dialogue, open the settings and change the message speed to fast immediately. This will reduce the time it takes to read dialogue.

Reduce the Difficulty to Easy

If you're not playing on Hard Mode, consider bringing the battle difficulty down to Easy. If you're trying to complete Clive's Quest with the event timer active, easier battles will make things much safer and simpler to complete while hitting your time thresholds.

Use the Remaster Bonus DLC to Gain an Advantage

Clive's Quest requires highly efficient play, but you can take advantage of the bonus DLC for Suikoden 2 HD Remaster to gain an early advantage.

This DLC adds a free Fortune Rune, Prosperity Rune, and 53,700 Potch to your inventory upon launch. These Runes and early funds allow you to pay for upgrades and gain levels faster than you normally would, making early battles easier.

Fire Emblems are Excellent Gear Items

The Fire Emblems found in the Highway Village armor shop are excellent gear picks that increase both Strength and add Fire Resistance. They'll help your party survive the attacks of Luca Blight and prove to be good accessories for any physical attacker afterward.

List of Events in Clive's Quest

Meet Clive and Elza in Muse City

You will see Clive and Elza for the very first time in Muse City during Chapter 3. In an alley to the right of the Runemaster, you will be approached by Elza, and Clive will follow shortly after. After the scene, approaching the city gate to the south will trigger another encounter with Elza, and you will obtain Sound Set 1. Clive will depart, following Elza.

If you do not trigger this event, you will not be able to recruit Clive. If you want to recruit him and complete the 108 Stars of Destiny, you have to go to the alley once you get to Muse City.

Recruiting Clive in South Window City

Once you have access to Lakewest Town in Chapter 4, you can recruit Clive by finding him near the entrance to South Window. Clive is continuing his pursuit of Elza, so you'll need to hurry to catch up with her.

Picking Up the Trail in Lakewest

Upon arriving in Lakewest, speak to the innkeeper, who will tell you that Elza left Clive a note. Clive will be infuriated, and will want to proceed to the location specified in the note, Forest Village, as soon as possible.

An Encounter in Forest Village

After gaining access to the Greenhill region in Chapter 5, you will be able to visit Forest Village. Upon arriving, Clive will say that Elza is present. Upon checking behind the Forest Village Trading Post, you apprehend a person dressed as Elza, but find that it's a stranger wearing a disguise.

To continue the chase, Clive must find Elza in the Knightdom of Matilda.

Running Circles in Matilda

Upon entering any Matilda region inn during Chapter 6, such as the inn in Rockaxe or Highway Village, you will interrogate some local thugs about their encounter with Elza.

Clive will then receive a clue that Elza is in Radat Town, back in the South Window region.

Shots Fired in Radat

Visiting the bar in Radat Town will prompt Clive to question the bartender as to Elza's whereabouts, quickly leading to a shootout. Clive loses, but awakens back at Headquarters in the care of Dr. Huan.

Clive will return to the party, ready to help with the main quest until he can recover.

A Reunion on Jowston Hill

Clive and Elza next meet on Jowston Hill in Muse City, after the liberation of Rockaxe Castle in early Chapter 10.

Clive and Elza will converse, with Clive inquiring as to why Elza spared his life back in Radat, and their shared connection to both the Howling Voice Guild and to the death of Clive's brother.

After the attempted duel, Elza will leave Clive, saying they will settle matters at Sajah Village, deep in Highland territory.

The Finale at Sajah Village

Taking a detour to Sajah Village while the army prepares to conquer Highland's capital of L'Renouille, Elza and Clive duel in truth. Unable to use his gun Storm, Clive selects Star, one of Elza's pistols.

With Clive victorious in the duel, Elza passes away, her regrets expended. Clive continues with his life as the true inheritor of Storm.
