It's exactly what the genre’s been missing.
The Momentum Never Stops
What makes running games like this truly captivating is keeping the momentum alive, and this game nails that balance—speed and freedom blend together in the most beautifully simple way. I was honestly blown away by how simple yet layered the running system is. From start to finish, you only really need a few buttons: movement, run, land, and item buttons. But don’t let that simplicity fool you; it’s the gameplay loop that takes this minimalism and turns it into a deeply engaging, addictive experience.
The premise is simple: race through diverse worlds, master your movement, and use items and abilities to keep advancing as the environment falls apart around you. Each of the ten Shards introduces a set of procedurally generated levels, and you can’t afford to fail—speed is essential, and every landing counts. Nail your landings, and you’ll build up speed to fly through levels. But mess up, and it’ll cost you.
You’ll need to think fast as you navigate constantly shifting surroundings, all while racing against time before the world crumbles. Along the way, you’ll pick up items from shops and use your hoverboard to gain even more speed—but it needs energy to work, and the only way to recharge it is by landing perfectly. This creates a fun, addicting loop where simplicity meets mastery, and the more you perfect your landings, the further you’ll go.
You’re not just running—you’re racing against the end of the world itself. You can’t just rely on speed; you’ll need to know when to run, when to reach new heights, and how to navigate the terrain. The freedom to parkour and take shortcuts makes each level feel like your own personal challenge. There’s a real sense of urgency, but it never feels forced or awkward, like some 3D Sonic games where you’re constantly fighting to maintain momentum. Here, every move matters—and it’s that constant tension that keeps you coming back for more.
Roguelite Progression System is a Hit or Miss
What really took me by surprise is that this game actually has roguelite elements, or at least roguelite-inspired mechanics. Here’s how it works: you enter Shards, and just like a roguelite, you progress through procedurally generated dungeon-like levels. There are even branching paths, where you can choose whether to visit an item shop to stock up or keep your momentum going by continuing your journey.
This approach brings a lot of exciting variety to the gameplay. The roguelite progression system keeps things fresh, preventing the experience from feeling repetitive. The levels shift constantly, and sometimes there are quirky objectives like having to catch 3 fast Weebohs, which was a blast and added some real diversity to the levels. It keeps you engaged and on your toes, always anticipating what’s coming next.
But, of course, it’s not all perfect. There are some major drawbacks. First off, the progression system can feel like a hit or miss, especially when it comes to collecting items. You’ll often need items to survive the harder levels, but they’re expensive. The shards you need to buy them are scarce, and you don’t collect nearly enough during the levels. It’s not like in Sonic or Mario, where coins or rings are practically everywhere—here, shards are rare, and that can be incredibly frustrating, especially as you progress. I really hope the devs reduce the prices of items to make it less of a grind.
Then there’s the saving system, which could use some serious improvement. You can only save and quit when you’re choosing a level. Once you’re in a level, your only option is to abandon your run—which is really annoying. I’ve had several runs where the procedurally generated levels just didn’t work out.
Sometimes the environments mess with your momentum, or the map feels directionless, or there’s an insane difficulty spike out of nowhere. It creates a lot of frustrating moments where runs end not because of my skills, but because of bad gameplay design choices.
I want to fail because I messed up, not because the game decided to throw a curveball with a broken level design or an unfair progression system.

The environments are hypnotic—whether you’re racing through lush grassy hills, lava-filled landscapes, or desolate planets, the game always dazzles with its stunning visuals. Even when the procedurally generated levels don’t quite land, they still look gorgeous, keeping you mesmerized no matter what.
The character designs are another standout feature. Each one has its own distinct personality, but Zoe, in particular, is just irresistible. Her bright red puffy outfit and glasses make her not only easy to keep track of while you’re zipping through levels, but they also add to her undeniable charm.
And the soundtrack? Pure magic. As the destruction creeps closer, you’ll notice the music shifting, becoming more disjointed and broken, as if it’s being sucked into the chaos around you. It’s not just a background element—it’s part of the experience, guiding you and amplifying the intensity of each run. Haste doesn’t just make you play—it makes you feel every moment of the chase.
As much as the game pulls you into that trance-like state, there are moments where it can snap you out of it—and not in a good way. Whether it’s frustrating levels or pesky bugs, they can occasionally break the flow. I've encountered a few bugs here and there, and while they haven't completely ruined any runs, they’ve definitely come close.
There were times when I couldn’t interact with a character for a while, or couldn’t click on an item—small things that just throw off the experience. Hopefully, the devs can iron out these glitches because once they’re gone, the game will feel even more seamless.
A Weak Narrative with Lackluster Characters
Unfortunately, the game’s narrative feels a bit lackluster, especially considering the intriguing premise of escaping the universe’s destruction. It’s a concept that could have been so engaging, yet the storytelling just doesn’t do it justice. The character designs are fantastic—each one has such unique and creative looks—but sadly, none of the characters really left an impression on me. They feel kind of forgettable, and to be honest, I can hardly recall any of their names—except for Zoe. It’s a real shame because the art style deserved characters with more depth to match.
Is HASTE: Broken Worlds Worth It?
The Hours Will Zoom Right Past You
Despite its flaws, the core gameplay loop remains incredibly engaging, and you can easily lose yourself in this game for hundreds of hours, especially once you unlock endless mode. The game is also prime for speedrunning, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a competitive community springs up around it. I’m hopeful the developers will address the issues and continue to improve the game.
There’s so much potential here—imagine parkour moves and freestyle gameplay while flying, akin to Spider-Man games. Adding the ability to customize outfits or even introducing a multiplayer mode would be amazing, especially since they originally planned it during development before scrapping it. The possibilities are exciting, and I’m eager to see what comes next!
