List of Contents
Chapter | Party Composition Summary |
---|---|
Chapter 2 | Rely on the Hero and Jowy’s Unite Attack for most battles, with Tsai’s Unicorn Rune providing strong additional damage. |
Chapter 3 | Nanami and Jowy are fixed party members. With a strong core already in place, you can freely choose the remaining three members to suit your playstyle. |
Chapter 4 | Use Freed Y, Viktor, and Nanami in the front row for durability, while the Hero, Eilie, and Rina provide support and magic from the back. |
Chapter 5 | During the Greenhill Infiltration, your options are limited. A well-balanced team includes Flik, Nanami, Ellie, Luc, and Tengaar. |
Chapter 6 | There are no boss battles in this chapter, so you can experiment with different team compositions. Prioritize strong damage dealers for smoother progression. |
Chapter 7 | Flik, Viktor, and Freed Y form a solid front line, while the Hero, Luc, and Tengaar handle magic damage from the back. |
Chapter 8 | Similar to Chapter 7’s setup, but replace Freed Y with Nanami for a more balanced party. |
Chapter 9 | Flik, Kahn Marley, and the Hero should focus on physical attacks at the front, while Tengaar, Luc, and Nanami deal magic damage from the back. |
Endgame | If available, include Tir McDohl as a key party member. Wakaba and Long Chan Chan are also excellent choices for high damage output. |
This guide provides a recommended party setup for each chapter. Adjust your team based on availability and preferred playstyle.

Use the Hero and Jowy's Unite attack—Buddy Attack—which can attack all enemies simultaneously.
It can be used every turn at no cost, so it is recommended to always use especially when leveling up during the early stages of the game.
Rune | Effect |
---|---|
Unicorn Rune | Deals 1x damage to one row of enemies. Inflicts Unbalance (100%) to self. Can only be equipped by axe users. |
Tsai has the Unicorn Rune that enables you to attack a row of enemies in a single move.
Tsai is a good M-range character, so it is recommended that you add him to the party and remove Rikimaru.
After escaping the fortress at the end of Chapter 2, your party will be automatically organized with random characters, and you will not be able to change it for a while.
To play through Chapter 3 with ease, it is recommended to try recruiting the strongest characters during this stage of the game.

Recruiting Anita is considered quite difficult to pull off, but it's recommended to recruit her to your party.

To trigger the Clive's Quest event, go to the shadow of the building in the northeast of Muse City.

Luc is recommended to recruit to your party as he is a character with high magic stats and is effective with many Runes.
He is a good S range character, but his durability is quite low, so he should be placed in the back row and used mainly for Rune attacks.
Oulan has a unique Rune called Angry Dragon Rune that can deal double damage to a single enemy. So, it is recommended to recruit Oulan and use her Rune.
Although Angry Dragon Rune can only be used once during battle, it can be used every turn if you are in the Anger state.

An event will occur where you have to choose who to recruit between Kasumi or Valeria. Either choice will not significantly affect the story progression, so you can freely choose the character you prefer.
There is not much difference between the two characters in terms of individual abilities. But Valeria is a slightly more effective physical attacker when it comes to combat.
Should You Choose Kasumi or Valeria?
The Luca boss fight requires three separate parties led by the Hero, Flik, and Viktor.
Since Luca can attack all enemies and deal great damage, each party should have a good balance of healers and attackers.

As Luca often attacks the entire front row, place characters with high HP in the front row.
The back row characters will be mainly used as attackers and support. Nina is a good fighter in the back row who can utilize her fire magic, and Millie is effective with her lightning magic attacks. Rina has a high aptitude for water, so equip her with Water Rune so she becomes a powerful healer for the party.

If you have played Suikoden 1 and have progressed to its final chapter, you will be able to recruit Tir when you reach chapter 8. To accommodate Tir in your party, it is recommended to remove Luc or Tengaar as they have overlapping roles.

It is recommended to recruit Mazus as he will be especially effective during most boss battles.
Replace Luc and use Mazus especially in boss battles where single-target magic is more useful than area-of-effect magic.
Mazus How to Recruit and Stats
Nanami will leave the party when you climb Rockaxe Castle. In place of Nanami, we recommend that you use Tengaar in the boss battles.
You won't be able to use Rune magic in this boss battle, so physical attacks like Oulan are effective during the Culgan and Seed boss battle.
