Switch 2 Direct Launching on April 2025
On January 16, 2025, Nintendo officially announced the highly-anticipated Switch 2, including an upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2. The company released a short teaser on YouTube, showcasing its sleek console design while retaining a similar functionality from its predecessor. It also confirmed that the hybrid console is backward compatible with the original Switch.
Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility Confirmed
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa initially confirmed that Switch 2 is backward compatible with the original Switch on a Twitter (X) post on November 6, 2024. This allows players to use their Nintendo account and play their previously purchased digital games on Switch 2.
However, the previously released Switch 2 video mentioned that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Switch 2.” No further explanation was given as to what titles are not backward compatible, but this might be revealed on the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
Switch 2 Rumored Specs, Much Powerful than Original Switch
According to rumors, the upcoming hybrid console is as powerful as PS4 and Xbox One, allowing it to run more graphically extensive games. This is due to recent reports mentioning that Switch 2 is using Nvidia’s T239 system-on-a-chip. Reports also suggest that the Switch 2 will have an 8-core Cortex-A78AE processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of internal embedded Multi-Media Card (eMMC) storage.
Meanwhile, its storage is speculated to be around 512GB, which is higher than other Switch models, between 32 GB and 64 GB. Moreover, Switch 2’s battery life is reported to be much longer than its predecessor which runs up to 9 hours of gaming.
Switch 2’s Magnetic Joy-Cons and Mouse Functionality
Moving away from the traditional rail-based attachment mechanism, Switch 2 will have magnetic Joy-Con controllers. This new controller design will attach to the sides of the Switch 2 tablet rather than sliding down onto rails. Another surprising addition to Switch 2’s Joy-Cons is its mouse-like functionality, where it can be detached and used like a computer’s mouse on a smooth surface. With this new functionality, new games will be more accessible to Switch 2, especially first-person shooter games.
Switch 2’s Rumor About the “C” Button
Reports suggest that the “C” button, found at the bottom of the home button on the right Joy-Con, has communication-related functionality. However, it is speculated that the features will only be accessible to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. It also has a function to share screens between players, allowing them to share their gaming experience with others.
Another rumor is its mouse-like functionality. It appears that this one is more credible than the other due to the Switch 2’s reveal video.
Switch 2 Price Point
Following the reveal of Nintendo’s latest financial results on February 4, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa participated in a Q&A session with the Japanese press about the Switch 2’s launch, including its potential pricing, as reported by VGC on February 5, 2025.
When asked about the reasonable price point for Switch 2, with global economic factors in mind, Furukawa mentioned that Nintendo is factoring in Japan’s current inflation rate and exchange rate environment. However, he reiterated that the company is also considering “the affordability that our customers expect from Nintendo products.”
Talking about hardware costs, the price of the original Switch will not change anytime soon according to Furukawa, despite their plan to support this console as long as demand for it exists. That said, the company will still produce the original Switch console, ahead of Switch 2’s launch. With its backward compatibility feature, players can transfer select games from the OG Switch to Switch 2. Perhaps, the upcoming Direct will reveal more about this feature.
Switch 2 Production Ramps Up to Combat Scalpers
In the same Q&A session, Furukawa revealed they are increasing the production of Switch 2 as a countermeasure against scalpers. By increasing the number of units produced, Switch 2’s stocks will be enough for their estimated buyers, dissuading scalpers or resellers from hoarding large numbers of this hybrid console.
Furukawa also mentioned that they are implementing other countermeasures for resale, but he did not disclose how Nintendo will do it. However, Nintendo might invest in technologies to identify bots and cancel their purchases. These bots are programmed to make automatic purchases of highly-anticipated products, causing shortage, which scalpers can sell for much higher prices.
Games Likely Part of Nintendo Direct February 2024
A New Mario Kart Game
The official Switch 2 reveal includes a single first-party game, and that is Mario Kart. Though the short teaser did not reveal any information about the game, it appears that 24 players can now race for the first time in the Mario Kart franchise history. The tracks are also seemingly wide, likely to make up for the increased player size and the chaos it entails.
Unconfirmed Games We Speculate Could Be Presented
Metroid Prime 4
Metroid Prime 4 was officially announced and revealed during the now-defunct E3 showcase. It will be published by Nintendo and developed by an unnamed studio with the participation of video game producer Kensuke Tanabe from Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD). However, in 2019, Nintendo announced that they were restarting the development of the game with a new developer.
Two years after its official reveal, EPD manager Shinya Takahashi announced that the game will be under the development of Retro Studios, developer of Metroid Prime games, with Tanabe. Takahashi noted that the previous developer did not meet Nintendo’s standards, prompting them to restart Metroid Prime 4’s development. Currently, no updates have been released about the game, but Nintendo reconfirmed that it is still in active development.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Officially announced on February 27, 2024, Pokemon Legends: Z-A is the latest installment of the Pokemon franchise. The game is set in Lumiose City, Kalos region, where an ongoing urban redevelopment plan for people and Pokemon is taking place. Unlike its predecessor, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, set in the ancient Sinnoh region, the game might be set in the future.
Though the game is set to release on the original Switch in 2025, this game might also be coming to Switch 2 via its backward compatibility feature.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II might be on its way to Switch 2. The latest installment to the Kingdom Come franchise follows the story of Henry of Skalitz as he sets out on a journey to avenge his murdered parents.
Its predecessor was released on the original Switch despite the console’s technical limitations. With Switch 2’s enhanced hardware specifications, it is not entirely impossible that Kingdom Come: Deliverance II might also be ported to Switch 2.
Civilization VII
Civilization VII is the latest installment of the Civilization franchise, which is set to release on February 11, 2025, on Switch and other consoles. The game introduces new Ages mechanics, Victory Conditions, and others, including the ability of players to mix and match leaders and civilizations. Considering that it will be released on the original Switch, with the map being limited to small, this game could potentially be released on Switch 2 as well. Considering that it is more powerful than its predecessor, the game might even grant Switch 2 players access to Medium and Large maps.
Gotham Knights
YouTuber Doctre81 claimed that Gotham Knights might be one of the first third-party titles heading to Switch 2. According to his claim, a developer from QLOC listed several games under their resume, including Gotham Knights, which is set to release on two unannounced consoles. The first console might be the original Switch, but the performance issues on its PS5 and Xbox versions might have affected the chance of it being ported to Nintendo’s hybrid console. However, the other unannounced console might be none other than Switch 2.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Hollow Knight: Silksong is the sequel to the acclaimed game Hollow Knight. Players follow the adventure of Hornet, a character introduced in the first Hollow Knight game. It was officially revealed on February 14, 2019, and was set to release in 2023. However, the game was met with delays and radio silence from its devs.
However, as rumors about Switch 2 reveal are ramping up, one of the creators of Hollow Knight, William Pellen, posted a cryptic message on Twitter (X) on January 15, 2025. “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.” After a day, Nintendo sneakily dropped the official reveal of Switch 2.
As the Switch 2 Direct date is revealed, Pellen changed his Twitter (X) profile to a slice of cake. One fan noticed the change and used Google’s reverse image search, finding an article about cake, which was published on April 2, 2024. Since the Direct is launching on April 2 this year, fans, including us, speculate that Hollow Knight: Silksong might be one of the games heading to Switch 2.
