Suikoden I - Branching Endings and Conditions

Suikoden 1 HD Remaster has two endings that are determined by your ability to recruit all characters in the game. Read on to learn what the endings are, the steps needed to achieve the Golden Ending, and how to avoid missing key characters.

Branching Endings and Conditions

There Are Two Branching Endings in Suikoden 1

Ending Condition to Get Ending
Normal Ending Do not have all recruitable characters before the final battle.
Golden Ending Have all 107 characters (excluding Gremio) before the final battle.

There are two types of endings in Suikoden 1: The Normal Ending and the Golden Ending. The Golden Ending requires that you get all playable characters. This means if you lose any of them at any point of the game (except Gremio), you will be locked out of the Golden Ending.

Check What Characters You Have With The Tablet of Stars

Suikoden 1 HD Remaster Tablet of Stars

Once you clear Toran Lake Castle, you will receive the Tablet of Stars, which is a list of all the characters you've recruited in the game so far. If you're aiming for the Golden Ending, make sure to check the tablet to see if you got all 108 (or 107, excluding Gremio) recruitable characters.

Differences Between the Branching Endings

The Main Character Leaves With Gremio in the Golden Ending

Suikoden 1 HD Remaster Both Endings

In the Normal Ending, the last scene in Suikoden 1 sees the hero leaving Gregminster by himself. But if you have the Golden Ending, the last scene will have the hero leave with Gremio by his side.

We recommend preparing two saves (one with all the characters, and one with missing characters) so you can watch the differences yourself.

How to Save

The Fates of Certain Characters Change in the Golden Ending

If you get all 108 Characters, the fates of characters like Gremio, Pahn, and Maximilian will be different in the Golden Ending.

Also, if you avoided having characters die during the War Battles, the game will not say they died in those conflicts.

How to Get the Golden Ending

Make Sure Pahn Wins His Duel With Teo

Suikoden 1 HD Remaster Pahn vs Teo McDohl

At some point in the game, the protagonist's father, Teo, will have to be fought. The first character in your party who will challenge him in a duel is Pahn, and Teo can easily wipe the floor with him if you were not leveling up Pahn beforehand.

Make sure to have Pahn at level 30 with the best gear you can give him. Defend consistently and hope that Teo uses Desperate Attack often so he shaves off his own HP.

If Pahn is defeated, he will die and you will not be able to have all the characters needed for the Golden Ending.

Ensure No Casualties Due to Army Battles

Suikoden 1 HD Remaster Win Army Battles

Certain enemies can die permanently when they lose in War Battles, so make sure to have Ninjas in your team. Ninjas act as spies and can predict the enemy's next move, making it easy for you to counter them and prevent casualties.
