When recruiting the Stars of Destiny, there are several characters that are both progression-sensitive and choice-sensitive. This means that choosing the wrong option or missing the timing of recruitment will make these particular characters unrecruitable them anymore.
Not having all 108 Stars of Destiny will lock you out of the the good ending, so it is highly recommended that you practice caution if you are aiming for the good ending.

Location: Northern Checkpoint After conquering Moravia Castle, he will appear at the Northern Checkpoint upon reaching Castle Level 3. Upon talking to him, he will ask to join the Liberation Army, and if you agree, he will join your party. |

Location: Seek Valley If your Castle Level is 4 or higher, bring Maas, Meese, Moose, and Mose with you and talk to him to recruit him to your army. |

Location: Rikon Once you reach Castle Level 4, Clive has a random chance to appear on the ground floor of the Rikon Inn. Speak to him to recruit him. If Clive does not appear in Rikon, leave and exit to the world map, then reenter the Rikon Inn again, repeating until he shows up. |

Location: Cave of the Past Crowley will join you if you speak to him in the hidden location within the Cave of the Past after reaching Castle Level 4. |

Location: Headquarters Basement After defeating Sonya at Shasarazade, speak to her in the jail cell located in the Headquarters basement (near Juppo and Kamandol's position). Ask her to join, and accept when she says she will hate you. |
List of All Characters and Recruit Conditions
Since achieving Castle Level 4 is an important requirement for recruiting certain late-game characters, you should check your castle level by leaving and reentering it using a boat after recruiting 90 or more characters.
If a cutscene plays that shows your castle with a large flag mounted on the side, then it has reached Level 4 and you can recruit the last remaining characters.
Castle Headquarters Guide: Upgrades and List of Facilities
After deciding on the Hero's name at the beginning of the game, it cannot be changed at any point in your playthrough. Although it does not have any effect on the game itself other than the dialogue, you should be mindful that this is an irreversible event.
Also, when transferring your Suikoden 1 data to Suikoden 2, the name of the protagonist in the Suikoden 1 data will affect the name given to him when he appears in Suikoden 2. This cannot be changed either.
Does the Protagonist Have a Canon Name?
The name of your Headquarters, which is decided on in Chapter 2, cannot be changed during your playthrough once it has been set. Remember that your Headquarter's name will be reflected as your Army Name and Kingdom Name during dialogue as well.
Additionally, when you transfer your Suikoden 1 data to Suikoden 2, the name of the inn in Banner Village (Suikoden 2) will use the name of your Headquarters in Suikoden 1. However, this does not affect any other content in the game and is only a minor change in dialogue.
What is the Canon Castle Name?
If you select a command that will cause you to lose an Army Battle event, some of your recruited characters may permanently die in battle. Once dead, their name will be grayed out in the Stone Tablet of Promise located in your Headquarters and they will not reappear at any point in your playthrough anymore.
It is highly recommended that you save before any major Army Battles as these events may occur randomly even when choosing the correct command in battle.
If Pahn loses the duel against Teo, Pahn will permanently die and will not reappear afterwards. Although the odds are against you in the duel, it is not an event where you will automatically lose. The key to Pahn's survival is preparation and strengthening him before the event so he can win against Teo.
How to Win Duels and Dialogue Patterns
If you are able to gather all 108 Stars of Destiny prior to the game's final battle, Gremio will be revived. If even one character is missing from the total 108 at this time, then Gremio will remain dead and will lock you out of the Good Ending.
Branching Endings and Conditions
Selling or discarding rare items that can only be obtained once means losing that item permanently. It is recommended that any valuable item that you do not want to lose should either be stored in the warehouse or be equipped to the Hero.
Certain items required for recruiting characters can also be sold accidentally, like Nameless Urns needed to get Jabba or the Opal needed to get Esmeralda. Take care not to discard or sell these before you've recruited the character!

Odessa Silverberg
• Ted • Characters that die in Army Battles |
Any items equipped by characters who will leave the party permanently, such as Odessa and Ted, will be permanently lost once they are gone from the team. This is also the case for characters who die in Army Battles.
One convenient change in the Suikoden 1 HD Remaster is the removal of the Blinking Mirror to the Party Items section of the menu. This means it does not need to be carried by the Hero in order to be used, and can no longer be sold or discarded, keeping the Fast Travel system safe from being disabled accidentally.
There is a maximum number of Rune Pieces that can be equipped to weapons, and once equipped, cannot be removed at any point. Since these items cannot be reused, it is recommended that make this decision carefully.
Also, attaching a Rune Piece to a weapon that already has one will result in the new Rune Piece overwriting the old one.
All Rune Pieces and Where to Get Them
Both the Magician's Island and the Village of the Hidden Rune will be inaccessible after progressing their respective chapters. The latter contains the Boar Rune Orb, which can only be obtained there, so be careful not to miss it.
Walkthrough Part 6: Fortress of Lorimar to Neclord's Castle
The Double-Jab Rune is one of the most powerful runes in the game, allowing a character to attack twice in one turn. Unfortunately, it is entirely unique, with only one copy existing in Suikoden 1, attached to Eikei.
However, unlike certain other unique runes like Valeria's Falcon Rune or Kasumi's Shrike Rune, Eikei's Double-Jab Rune can be removed at a Rune Shop and attached it to a different character with a free rune slot, like Viktor. Don't miss out on recruiting Eikei and his powerful rune.
Your battle at the Floating Fortress of Shasarazade in Chapter 8 marks the point of no return for Suikoden 1's story. After completing it and proceeding with the invasion of Gregminster, you will no longer be able to recruit any new characters.
You will still be able to enter the world map and visit most locations, and return to Headquarters, but all other story-related events will be cut off outside of entering Gregminster Castle and defeating the Emperor.
Further, between the battle of Shasarazade and the invasion of Gregminster is the only time you will be able to recruit Sonya Shulen, the last Star of Destiny. Don't forget to speak to her in the Headquarters basement!
