The Zombie Dragon at Toran Lake Castle is the first "true" boss of Suikoden 1. Compared to the previous two bosses, excluding the Queen Ant, the fight is significantly more difficult so make sure that you're prepared beforehand.

To make the fight easier, you'll want to grind EXP until your party is at least Level 17. Besides utilizing the Fortune Rune, you'll want to fight enemies in Toran Lake Castle or the Great Forest to get as much experience as possible.

Use Fire Magic and Keep Cleo Alive

Luckily for your party, the Zombie Dragon is weak against Fire, and Cleo should still have the Fire Rune equipped. This gives her access to powerful Fire magic like Firestorm, Flaming Arrows, and Dancing Flames, which should all deal double damage to the boss.

Since you only have one Fire Rune, and it's equipped on Cleo, she will be the key to your victory. Make sure to protect her during the entire fight and prioritize healing her first before any other party member.

Have at Least One Water Rune Equipped

Before going into the fight, you'll want to visit Seika to purchase at least one Water Orb for 7000 Potch. This is extremely useful since it will let you use the Drops of Kindness spell, which fully heals an ally, as well as removes any negative status ailments they may have.

If you're not being greedy by having Fortune or Prosperity Runes equipped, you'll want to have Water Runes on the rest of the party so that you're no longer reliant on items for healing.

Stock Up on Healing Items

Even if you have one or more Water Runes equipped, spell slots are still limited and may run out during the fight. Just in case, make sure you still have Medicines or Mega Medicines in your inventories so that you can still heal even if you run out of Drops of Kindness casts.

Make Sure Your Gear Is Maxed Out

Since this is the first difficult boss you'll encounter, you'll want to make sure that you have the best possible equipment going into the fight. The best places to visit for this are the Great Forest Village and Kouan for a blacksmith and the best possible armour shop, at this point, respectively.

However, this can become expensive so make sure to have a Prosperity Rune equipped and save up the Potch you get while farming for EXP.

Hero	Best Rune: Soul Eater • Keep spamming his normal attack. • Use him to heal your party members as needed.
Gremio	Best Rune: Water Rune • Use him as a healer with the Water Rune's Drops of Kindness spell. • If nobody needs healing, have him do normal attacks.
Viktor	Best Rune: Clone Rune • His powerful normal attacks make him your second-best damage dealer, so try to keep him alive as well if you can.
Cleo	Best Rune: Fire Rune • Your most important damage dealer in this battle, so keep her alive at all costs. • Keep spamming her strongest Fire spells first until they run out of uses. • Don't waste turns making her heal herself and have other characters do that instead.
Camille	Best Rune: Water Rune • Just like the hero, make Camille do normal attacks, only stopping to heal when necessary.
Tai Ho	Best Rune: Water Rune • Similar to the hero and Camille, only have him do normal attacks and heal when necessary.
