Since this is the first boss fight of the game, you'll want to make sure that your party has levelled up enough before facing it.

It's recommended to grind for EXP by fighting enemies outside of Gregminster instead of on the Magician's Island since they give more EXP and you can heal at the Inn rather than having to use Medicine.

Use Medicine When You Have To

Even if this is essentially the tutorial boss fight, you'll still want to make sure that your party members remain alive and healthy. If you need to, take some time to heal using Medicine so that any low HP party members don't die and miss gaining EXP after the fight.

In case you're running low on Medicine, and you didn't buy more in a shop, you can find some in a chest on the way to the boss.

Spam Attacks From the Boar Rune

The best way to take down this boss is by utilizing attacks from Pahn's Boar Rune. It will deal double damage to an enemy, but it will also cause him to lose balance afterwards.

Even if there's a downside to using the Rune, it's still worth doing since it deals a ton of damage and it will overall do more damage compared to using Pahn and Gremio's Unite Attack instead.

Hero	Best Rune: None ・ The main hero of Suikoden and your first frontline character.
Gremio	Best Rune: Fortune/Prosperity ・ Your second frontline attacker and the hero's faithful retainer/butler.
Pahn	Best Rune: Boar ・ Your third frontline attacker, who seems to deal the most damage out of the three frontliners in this party thanks to his Boar Rune.
Cleo	Best Rune: Fortune/Prosperity ・ Your first ranged attacker. Useful while grinding levels, as she can hit enemies in the back row unlike the Hero, Gremio, or Pahn.
Ted	Best Rune: None ・ Your second ranged attacker, and the hero's best friend. ・ Just like Cleo, he can hit enemies in the back row, making the process of grinding levels before facing the Clay Doll much faster.

Get a Fortune or Prosperity Rune at the Start of the Game

If you've already levelled up your hero to around Level 8-10, you can head west from Gregminster to the village of Sarady. Depending on if you went there alone or with Ted, you'll get the Fortune or Prosperity Rune respectively.

As of now, they can only be equipped on Gremio or Cleo since the other three party members either already have a Rune equipped or can't equip one due to story reasons.

Get Both Runes for Free as a Pre-Order Bonus

If you pre-ordered the game, you'll get both Runes as part of the Pre-Order DLC package. This means that you can get an extra Fortune or Prosperity Rune from Sarady, allowing you to gain a ton of EXP or Potch as you wish.
