Duels are a combat mechanic present in Suikoden 1 HD Remaster. Learn what duels are, how to win duels, the trophies you can earn from duels, and the different dialogue patterns from each character here!

Players will win duel battles by predicting and countering enemy's actions. Attack beats Defense, Defense beats Special, and Special beats Attack.
Defend reduces damage from Attack commands. It also parries and counters Special commands, dealing damage to the opponent. If one chooses Attack and the other chooses Special, both take damage, but the one hit by the Special attack receives more.
NPC dialogue during duels correlates to which move they will make. Paying attention and memorizing these dialogue cues will help you win these duels easier, as it will help players counter these moves.
Determining whether the opponent will use Defend is kinda easy, as you just need to understand their dialogue choices. If the opponent sounds cautious or tries to taunt you into attacking, they are most likely going to use Defend.
Attack and Special commands are a bit harder to distinguish without referencing the dialogue table below. If the opponent mentions something like unleashing their technique or ultimate attack, it's most likely a Special command rather than a simple Attack command.
