How to Protect Characters

Certain Characters Protect Other Characters That Are in Critical Condition

Suikoden 1 - Battle Line

When you have a character with low health targeted by an enemy attack, there is a chance that another character in the party will take the hit for them. This will only happen if both characters are compatible.

This can be a lifesaver for the character in critical condition, as they will be safe from further damage even if more and more enemies concentrate their attacks on him or her.

Characters Are in Critical Condition When They Are Kneeling

Suikoden 1 - Critical Health

Characters enter critical condition when their HP is low and they are visibly kneeling during battle.

Protecting Other Characters Still Causes Damage

Character Damage
Character A
(Protector)
Takes Damage for Character B
Character B
(Protected)
Takes No Damage

If Character A protects Character B, Character A will still receive damage. So, make sure that you heal Character B as quickly as possible.

Don't rely too much on having one character protect another, or else that character's HP will also drop to critcal condition.
