Final Fantasy VII Remake Overview

Final Fantasy VII Remake (also known simply as FF7 Remake) is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. Initially released in April 2020 for PlayStation 4 and later for PC, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo Switch 2, it serves as a modern reimagining of the original Final Fantasy VII. Rather than covering the entirety of the original game, however, the remake focuses solely on the Midgar section of the PS1 game.

Exploration this time around alternates between linear story-driven segments and semi-open areas that feature side quests and activities. Character progression relies on traditional RPG elements, like leveling up and equipping weapons and Materia—crystallized Mako energy that grants users the ability to wield magic in combat.

FF7 Remake is set in Midgar, an urban city controlled by the Shinra Electric Power Company, a megacorporation exploiting the planet’s life force—the Mako energy—for industrial power. Players follow Cloud Strife, a former soldier-turned-mercenary, who joins the eco-terrorist group Avalanche. Avalanche seeks to dismantle Shinra and protect the planet from ecological collapse. As the story unfolds, Cloud and his friends will uncover deeper conspiracies and face threats beyond Shinra’s machinations, including Cloud’s ties to Sephiroth.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Gameplay

Final Fantasy VII Remake does away with the original game’s gameplay mechanics. The Active Time Battle (ATB) system has been reworked to fill over time or through attacks. To emulate the turn-based combat of the PS1 game, players can slow down time to a crawl and execute special abilities, magic, or use items. Each action, however, consumes a segment of the ATB bar.

Players can switch between party members mid-battle, and leverage each character’s specialties like Cloud’s melee combat prowess and Barret’s ranged attacks. Additional systems include magic, summons, and the Limit Break gauge, which unlocks powerful attacks when fully charged.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Reviews

Remade to Near Perfection

Image

Final Fantasy VII Remake currently holds a Metacritic score of 87, while its Intergrade expansion boasts an 89. Several outlets, including GameSpot, awarded both titles a perfect 10/10. They lauded how the developers were able to expand the Midgar section of the original game's first disc. However, they noted minor criticisms such as a clunky camera and the late introduction of optional side quests. IGN rated the game an 8/10, acknowledging its revitalization of a classic narrative. Nevertheless, they pointed out the story's increased complexity.

Digital Trends awarded FF7 Remake Intergrade a 3 out of 5 star rating, the lowest critical score on Metacritic. While they commended the game's strong writing and performances, they criticized its linearity, which prevented a higher score.
User reviews on Metacritic maintain a favorable 8.4 rating, with many praising the depth they added to the characters and story. However, some users expressed disappointment with filler content and the game's linearity.
