Split Fiction Overview
Split Fiction is an action-adventure co-op game developed by Hazelight Studios, known for titles like It Takes Two and A Way Out. Released on March 6, 2025, it continues the studio’s focus on delivering cooperative multiplayer games.
The game focuses on two aspiring writers, Mio and Zoe, who become entangled within their own stories after a technological mishap at Rader Publishing, a company capable of "bringing narratives to life". The two must now work together in their overlapping stories, which span both sci-fi and fantasy genres, as they attempt to reclaim their creative works from the publishing company.
Split Fiction supports "Friend’s Pass," which allows game owners to invite a friend to play for free, and offers cross-platform play across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.

Split Fiction Gameplay
Split Fiction features split-screen cooperative multiplayer, so two players would have to work together either locally or online. Players control two authors, Zoe and Mio, who are trapped within a simulation blending their respective fantasy and science fiction narratives. Like in It Takes Two, each level introduces new mechanics and abilities tailored to the specific world the players are in. For instance, the two might have to escape from a supernova in one moment and then find themselves engaging in a dance battle with a monkey the next.
Split Fiction Reviews
Universal Acclaim Right Off the Bat
Split Fiction received universal acclaim, evidenced by its pre-release Metacritic score of 91. Game8 awarded the game a score of 90 out of 100, but their review noted the narrative’s occasional reliance on clichéd tropes. However, they commended the game’s other elements, particularly its gameplay and presentation—even suggesting its potential to replicate the award-winning success of its predecessor, It Takes Two.
IGN similarly rated the game 9 out of 10, describing the experience as a dynamic and varied one. They noted minor visual issues, such as character clipping, which, while intended to make gameplay more fluid, were perceived as detracting from the game’s polished appearance.
Conversely, Eurogamer and GameSpot awarded Split Fiction perfect scores, 5 out of 5 and 10 out of 10 respectively. These reviews specifically commended the game’s level designs and gameplay mechanics.
