Oblivion Remastered’s performance degrades with longer play times on all consoles. Read on to learn more about the game’s issues on different platforms and what multiple tests say the problems are.
Oblivion Remastered Console Concerns
60fps Performance Degrades Over Continuous Play
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered had a successful launch, amassing over 4 million players who ventured to Cyrodiil. However, Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry reported that the game still has glaring concerns, particularly on its console releases, which degrade in performance over time with continuous play.
In an article by Eurogamer on May 10, they detailed the issues when playing on consoles. According to Digital Foundry Senior Staff Writer Thomas Morgan, Virtuous’ Unreal Engine 5 overhaul made massive improvements visually, but has a boatload of performance problems.
Morgan stated, "No platform is spared of issues: whether it's PS5, PS5 Pro, or either Xbox Series machine, all struggle with traversal hitches while roaming the open world. Secondly, there's major sub-60fps frame-rates, where I've also discovered that performance slowly degrades with more playing time - quite possibly down to a memory leak. And finally, software freezes are the icing on the cake, with all PlayStation and Xbox platforms crashing to the system menu on loading a save one too many times."
Based on their tests, "60fps performance also degrades with continuous play time on PS5 and Xbox." This means a fresh restart of the game has a higher frame rate than when playing for over 15 minutes. Performance can dip when traveling between areas and going through multiple save states, which also overloads the engine.
Memory Management Issue
As previously mentioned, Morgan attributes these issues to a memory leak, as all consoles crash after some time. A memory leak in a game happens when the game reserves memory for something (an in-game object or any resource) but doesn't free it up after it's finished with it. Despite not using these resources, the game accumulates a buildup of inaccessible memory.
This is evident especially when traversing the world, and all consoles experience stutters in the same spots. Both PS5 and PS5 Pro consistently freeze at the same point after repeatedly loading identical save sequences, returning to the console's main menu. Similarly, Xbox consoles exhibit this issue by abruptly stopping save loading and returning to the Xbox menu.
The save point with an issue will work after a fresh boot of the console. Although these crashes may not affect everyone, the tests show that with longer gaming times, the possibility of it happening increases.
Many expect these concerns to be addressed soon, as the game’s performance issues inhibit it from reaching new heights, especially with its Unreal Engine 5 upgrade. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S (available on Xbox Game Pass), and PC.
