Dune: Awakening’s studio is prepared for an overcrowded launch while getting ready for its large-scale beta this weekend. Read on to learn more about Funcom’s plans for its servers on launch and what fans can expect..
Dune: Awakening Pre-Launch Updates
Funcom’s Servers Are Prepared
As Dune: Awakening inches closer to its release, developer Funcom assures fans that they are prepared for a possible overcrowded launch in June. In a Steam post on May 7, Funcom answered some of the most pressing questions after the first closed beta regarding this possibility, and explained the game’s server and large-scale multiplayer mechanics.
At the start of the game, players can choose a server to serve as their home. These servers are within a World, having at least 20 servers. Players can meet and interact with other players from servers in their World.
However, fans raised several concerns regarding Funcom’s server load and queues. The studio expects to have a heavy load during launch, with some servers possibly maxing out. They want to assure that there will be "thousands of servers grouped together in hundreds of Worlds available at launch."
"What’s important to note is that while a Hagga Basin server can support 40 people playing concurrently, the way populations ebb and flow over the course of a day means that it still supports several hundred people picking that server as their home." Funcom explained. "This has been rigorously tested during closed beta, and we have systems in place that will restrict too many characters being created on a server that is becoming too popular, to minimize the chance of servers becoming full."
Dune: Awakening is focused on its large-scale multiplayer mechanics, but it can still be enjoyed alone. Despite joining a multiplayer environment, players can take on Arrakis solo. As for single-player and private servers, these will not be available at launch, but rather, will be included in post-launch updates.
What To Expect During The Large-Scale Beta Weekend
Before the game’s official launch however, the game’s large-scale beta weekend is on the horizon, and Funcom provided more details about what fans can expect from this event. In a post on the Dune: Awakening’s official website on May 8, they discussed what the upcoming beta will feature.
