Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Maelle can do over 2 billion damage with her nuke build. Read on to learn more about how to reach crazy damage and how Sandfall Interactive is taking notice of this overpowered skill.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Updates
Stendhal Hurts, A Lot
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the gift that keeps on giving as players discover more things each day that passes, just like how a player discovered a way to hit up to 2 billion damage with the Expeditioner, Maelle.
After finishing the main story, the game opens up its endgame, which fans must play as it contains more story elements and challenging bosses they have never encountered before. This may be daunting, as most bosses have gigantic bars of HP, while some even have one-hit damage. Thus, players have discovered a way to fight back— with a nuke build. Note that some parts of this article may include minor spoilers, so tread carefully.
In the game, Maelle has a skill called Stendhal, which does big damage. This can be amped up to 200% when she is in her Virtuose stance. For Maelle’s nuke build to work, she will need 2 specific Luminas, which can be unlocked when using Pictos (equipable items that provide various effects).
The Luminas required for this overkill damage are Cheater, which gives players another turn, and Shortcut, which also gives another turn when they drop below 30% hit points.
Additionally, players must obtain Maelle’s weapon, the Medalum. This allows Maelle to start the battle in Virtuose stance. Another skill she needs would be Last Stand, which puts her into Virtuose stance and reduces her to one hit point.
Moreover, Maelle must equip any three of the following skills as wells: Painted Power that lets damage exceed 9,999, Death’s Door that gives an extra 50% damage at low health, Confident Fighter gives another 30% but removes the ability to heal, Inverted Affinity which gives another 50% but makes healing hurt, and others that can boost her damage by a percentage.
There are a lot of Picto and Lumina combinations that players can try out with Maelle, but with everything mentioned, she can do over 2 billion damage. For comparison, the endgame boss Simon has around 45 million HP. With Maelle’s nuke strategy, dealing her damage could kill Simon 48 times over, which is overkill to say the least.
As of writing, players are still trying to top their damages, using various ways and characters to do crazy numbers. Expedition 33’s challenging post-game pushes players to devise unique strategies to make their journeys easier and fun.
Stendhal Getting Nerfed
Sandfall Interactive noticed Stendhal was making the game too easy for the players. In a Twitter (X) post on May 8, the studio said there would be upcoming changes to Maelle’s skill. According to the post, they weren’t supposed to make any balance changes this early in the game, just some bug fixes.
However, with the extreme damage Stendhal does, they have decided to adjust it. Initially, the move was underwhelming during most of their development. Sandfall said that in their final pre-release balance pass, they gave it a big damage boost and overdid it.
"We still want you to be able to break the game—and you absolutely still can—but Stendhal was making it a bit too easy." Sandfall Interactive explained. They will be including the Stendhal changes in their first full hotfix set going live today. The patch will come to Steam first, then to other platforms shortly after.
2 Million Copies in 12 Days
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues to achieve milestones as it reaches another million in copies sold. In a recent Twitter (X) post on May 6, they announced that Expedition 33 has crossed 2 million copies sold in just 12 days since its launch.
Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron replied to one of Expedition 33’s posts on Instagram, congratulating the team for their achievements and for representing French culture. He stated, "Congratulations to Sandfall Interactive and all the creators of Expedition 33. You are a shining example of French audacity and creativity."
With all things considered, Expedition 33 is a strong contender for this year’s Game of the Year award, especially since it could very well reach more milestones. The developers look to improve the game with its updates, and it could even have DLC if things go well.
