Shadow Labyrinth Gameplay
The full extent of Shadow Labyrinth's gameplay remains a mystery, but the official reveal trailer offers a glimpse of its unique approach. Unlike the arcade classic Pac-Man, which loosely inspires it, Shadow Labyrinth emphasizes action and platforming. Armed with a sword, players must fend off the planet's hostile flora and fauna in this thrilling 2D adventure.
The gameplay highlights dynamic combat and movement, with players able to swing their sword to attack, dash, dodge, and maneuver through intricately designed stages. Precision and positioning are crucial, as survival depends on deft navigation and tactical decision-making.
Three Modes of Play for Swordsman No.8, PUCK, and GAIA
Three gameplay modes have been introduced for Shadow Labyrinth's platforming mechanics, each associated with the game's two central characters: Swordsman No.8 and their floating drone companion, PUCK. The game also features a version of the classic Pac-Man powerup, the Power Pellet, known here as GAIA.
Swordsman No.8 is the primary character, controlled by the player for most of the gameplay. Their role involves skillfully dodging projectiles and obstacles while using their sword to engage with enemies. PUCK, on the other hand, can navigate tight spaces and discover hidden paths that are otherwise inaccessible.
GAIA enhances both characters, transforming them into a giant robotic form with immense power, allowing them to overcome enemies and obstacles with ease while also devouring defeated enemies.
Purchaseable Upgrades
Upon acquiring GAIA, players gain the ability to consume enemies for upgrade materials. These materials can be used at a terminal resembling a shop to purchase various enhancements. While the most recent trailer did not showcase a wide range of upgrades, a few examples include enhancements to Swordsman No.8’s air dash, increased damage resistance, item-related upgrades, and improvements to a currently undisclosed stat referred to as ESP.
Shadow Labyrinth Story Plot
Unlike Pac-Man, Shadow Labyrinth offers a story and setting, though details remain scarce for now. What we do know is that players take on the role of Swordsman No. 8, guided by PUCK, a floating mechanical drone providing instructions. Together, their sole objective is to survive the planet's perilous flora and fauna.
According to the game's official website, survival demands more than just evasion—Swordsman No. 8 must defeat increasingly larger enemies and consume them to grow stronger. This cycle of predation drives the journey deeper into ancient, mysterious ruins teeming with danger. As players descend into the unknown, they’ll uncover the secrets of this hostile world one battle at a time.
