Phasmophobia Gameplay
Phasmophobia redefines ghost hunting by blending investigative methods with cooperative deduction rather than traditional supernatural rituals.
Up to four players can team up to investigate a haunted location before the main exorcism team arrives, with the sole objective of identifying the spirit type. Using specialized ghost-hunting equipment, players must gather evidence, eliminate possibilities, and deduce the entity’s identity—all before it turns hostile.
Each tool has a distinct role in the investigation. The Spirit Box allows direct communication with ghosts, while the EMF Detector measures paranormal activity, with maximum readings serving as unique evidence for certain spirits. The UV Light reveals hidden handprints and footprints, while the D.O.T.S Projector highlights ghostly silhouettes passing through its grid. Lastly, the Thermometer helps locate the ghost’s “haunt room” and detect freezing temperatures, another key clue.
Since gathering evidence can take time, players must also monitor their Sanity, which drains when exposed to darkness or witnessing supernatural events. If the team’s average Sanity drops below 50%, most ghosts will become aggressive, triggering deadly hunts.
Successfully identifying the ghost and escaping rewards players with money and experience, allowing them to upgrade their gear or acquire new investigative tools to improve their chances in future hauntings.
Phasmophobia Story Plot
Although Phasmophobia doesn’t follow a structured narrative, it establishes a unique framing device that positions players as the scouting team sent ahead before the real ghost hunters arrive. Their sole objective is identification—determining the exact type of entity haunting a location so that professional exorcists can handle the rest.
However, even this preliminary task is fraught with danger. Ghosts react unpredictably to investigators, and as players gather evidence, they risk drawing the entity’s attention. A successful investigation means securing enough information to correctly classify the ghost and escaping with their findings intact—but failure could mean never making it out at all.
