Specific gameplay details for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment are limited, but it is known that the game will combine hack-and-slash mechanics from KOEI TECMO’s Dynasty Warriors series with characters and settings from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Players will engage in battles against hordes upon hordes of enemies as characters from the Legend of Zelda series, like Princess Zelda and King Rauru.

Given the series’ history, Age of Imprisonment may incorporate gameplay elements from previous Hyrule Warriors titles. In Hyrule Warriors, players controlled various characters and utilized a range of weapons and abilities to defeat large numbers of enemies. The game also featured a combo system, special attacks, and a weak-point gauge for executing powerful moves. Additionally, they also included role-playing elements, such as weapon and character leveling, as well as an Adventure Mode that allowed players to complete specific objectives on a map inspired by the original The Legend of Zelda.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity expanded upon these mechanics by integrating environmental puzzle-solving and the use of the Sheikah Slate and paraglider from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Players could upgrade characters, complete missions and challenges, and cook foods that provided buffs. The game also introduced the ability to control Divine Beasts to combat large groups of enemies.

Given these points and that Age of Imprisonment is a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the game could incorporate combat mechanics from that game, similar to how Age of Calamity borrowed elements from Breath of the Wild. The trailer already hinted at constructs and Zelda's use of the Recall ability, although the extent of borrowed elements remains unknown.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Story

Image

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment chronicles the events of the Imprisoning War, a pivotal conflict in Hyrule’s ancient history that precedes the events of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Princess Zelda is transported back in time to an era where the kingdom is on the brink of war. In this period, she allies with King Rauru, one of the last remaining Zonai, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia to confront the rising threat of Ganondorf, who seeks to plunge Hyrule into darkness.

Ultimately, as evidenced by Tears of the Kingdom, their combined efforts will lead to the sealing of Ganondorf, setting the stage for the events that follow in Hyrule’s storied timeline.
