Digimon Story Time Stranger Gameplay

Image

Digimon Story Time Stranger is a JRPG with monster-collecting and raising elements. As such, the core gameplay loop centers around collecting and raising Digimon to have them battle other Digimon. Players will explore two parallel worlds—the human world and the Digital World of Iliad—to interact with Digimon communities and, if past Digimon Story titles are any indication, undertake quests to advance the narrative.

At the start of the game, players will choose one of three starter Digimon—Patamon, Gomamon, or DemiDevimon—who will accompany them throughout the game. With over 450 Digimon to train—surpassing the combined roster of Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory—Time Stranger offers the largest Digimon selection in the series. Players can form bonds with these Digimon, which directly influences their growth and combat effectiveness. If Time Stranger follows previous Digimon Story entries, players can recruit Digimon by scanning their data after encountering them in the wild enough times. Raising Digimon involves training, feeding, and guiding them through evolution and devolution, which will allow them to explore various evolutionary paths.

Evolution plays a significant role in any Digimon game, as it allows Digimon to grow into more powerful forms with new abilities and higher stats. A Digimon's evolutionary path depends on several factors, including stat thresholds and level.

Combat in Time Stranger will retain the series’ turn-based combat. These games typically feature strategic battles where players utilize Digimon’s unique skills, their type advantages, and status effects. Building a balanced team is crucial, as different Digimon excel in different roles. Players will likely be able to manage their Digimon’s stats, learn new moves, and use items during combat.

Digimon Story Time Stranger Story Plot

Time Stranger will have players choose between two protagonists: Dan Yuki and Kanan Yuki, both top agents of ADAMAS, a secret organization that investigates anomalous phenomena. The character not chosen will act as the player’s operator and offer guidance and commentary throughout the story.

After encountering a mysterious Digimon in Shinjuku, the protagonist is caught in an explosion and wakes up eight years in the past. They must now, then, uncover the mystery behind the impending collapse of the world, exploring the interplay between the past and future, the human and digital worlds, and the relationships between humans and Digimons.

The game’s setting will be divided between the Human World, focused on detailed recreations of Tokyo areas like Shinjuku and Akihabara, and the Digital World, known as Iliad. Shinjuku has been designed with a greater sense of scale and detail, including a faithfully recreated underground mall. The Digital World’s Central serves as a bustling hub where players will encounter various Digimon and visit shops. Unlike previous entries, which primarily explored Cyberspace, this title has a greater focus on interacting with the Digital World.

Aside from Dan and Kanan Yuki, the story features Inori Misono, a kind-hearted high school girl with a mysterious past. Inori's partner, Aegiomon, plays a key role in the story, as he is the Rookie form of Jupitermon, a member of the Olympos XII—mega-level Digimon modeled after the Twelve Olympians.
