Tides Of Annihilation Trailer Showcases Fast-Paced Combat

A Sneak Peak Into An Apocalyptic London

First revealed at the recently concluded PlayStation State of Play last week, the hack-and-slash action-adventure game Tides of Annihilation fueled more interest in its upcoming release with a newly revealed extended gameplay trailer.

The trailer presented early development gameplay footage featuring protagonist Gwendolyn and her sword-transforming companion, Niniane, exploring the ruins of a desolate otherworldly London that was ravaged by an Outworld invasion. As they trekked through the eroding streets, enemies hindered them from moving forward. It is then revealed that Gwendolyn has the ability to summon a band of over ten legendary knights inspired by King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

After clearing the way of enemies and more exploration through a magical portal, the duo is then pulled into a boss fight with a character named Mordred, who seems to have clashing goals with Gwendolyn and will not stop to end her plan. The boss fight showcased more of the game’s action-filled combat, complemented by the haunting choir singing in the background before concluding.

As per the game’s producer Kun Fu over at the PlayStation.Blog, the battle system will feature "intuitive co-op combat in a single-player experience." Two spectral knights with distinct combat roles can be summoned at a time, and players will need to strategize based on the situation. "The interplay between Gwendolyn and the knights creates a dynamic, fast-paced, and deeply engaging combat experience. It’s a system that our team (veterans from top game studios) fell in love with during internal playtests."

A Nod To Devil May Cry And Bayonetta

Players have taken to the video’s comments to praise its content, such as the art direction, art style, fast-paced and fluid hack-and-slash type combat, and overall gameplay, comparing it to the classic Devil May Cry (DMC) and Bayonetta franchises, while also echoing the likes of Elden Ring, NieR: Automata, Stellar Blade, and Final Fantasy 16. Just from the trailer alone, netizens have shared their enthusiasm and excitement for the title, acknowledging its "immense potential" and that they’ll be purchasing it on launch.

Tides of Annihilation is Chengdu-based game studio Eclipse Glow Games’ debut title that fuses Arthurian legend with an alternate modern-day London. Players will take on the shoes of heroine Gwendolyn as a survivor of an apocalyptic event. There is currently no release window set in stone yet, but the title is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
