Suikoden STAR LEAP Is The Franchise’s First Mobile RPG
Konami Wanted To Reach A Wider Audience
Suikoden’s upcoming mobile game, Suikoden STAR LEAP, will have a console game-like experience. Star Leap developers shared their insights on developing the game in an interview with Famitsu on March 4, 2025.
Star Leap Producer Shinya Fujimatsu discussed why Konami chose mobile as the dedicated platform for the game. He explained, "We wanted as many people as possible to experience Suikoden, so we chose mobile as the easiest hardware to play. And if you are going to touch it, I want it to have the soul of Suikoden properly, so I am taking on the challenge of creating a numbered work."
Furthermore, the team aims to deliver Star Leap as a game that features the quality of console games in terms of visuals, sounds, and stories, fusing it with the accessibility of the mobile platform.
Expressing Suikoden in STAR LEAP
Fujimatsu said that the uniqueness of Suikoden comes from the game depicting war themes but also focusing on friendship. According to him, "In Suikoden STAR LEAP, I think it is important for Suikoden Genso to be able to depict the story of the new 108 stars."
Suikoden STAR LEAP Director Yoshiki Meng Shan elaborated on the characteristics of the series, pointing out that it has an upbeat atmosphere with the relationship of friends while having serious scenes. He continued, "The other is the tempo of the battles, and I think that the fact that many characters participate in battles and work together is also unique to Suikoden."
Both a Sequel and a Prequel to the Series
Star Leap will act as both a sequel and prequel to the series, jumping from different eras as the game goes. It will be a brand new installment for Suikoden, so it will be part of the series’ official history. The story of Star Leap will begin 2 years before the events of Suikoden 1 but will go through other eras, acting as both a sequel and prequel to Suikoden 1 to 5.
Fujimatsu encouraged fans to look forward to Star Leap’s high quality. He added, "Even if you have never touched the series, we have made it easy to play in the form of mobile and easy to get used to the story and game, so we hope that you will experience this game as the first game in ‘Suikoden Genso’."
Meng Shan shared this sentiment and said, "Suikoden is one of the leading RPG series in Japan. In keeping up with its name, we have paid attention to everything from the story, graphics, battle system, sound, and training system to live up to its name. We hope you will be able to play it after the release."
Suikoden STAR LEAP was first announced on the Suikoden Live broadcast on March 4, 2025 along with other upcoming events and projects in the series. The game is being developed for iOS and Android. There are no official announcements regarding Star Leap’s release date.
