Onimusha: Way of the Sword New Details Revealed

Will Have "The Ultimate Sword-Fighting Action," Said Producer and Director

Capcom's recent Spotlight event on February 4, 2025 showcased not only news about Monster Hunter Wilds' upcoming beta, but also new details about Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Set to release in 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, this installment marks the series' return after nearly two decades.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set during the early Edo period in Kyoto, a city transformed by a malevolent force known as Malice. This has corrupted the land and turned it into a haven for the "Genma," otherworldly creatures that have resurfaced to wreak havoc. As an Onimusha equipped with the legendary Oni Gauntlet due to a "twist of fate," players will find themselves mowing down hordes of Genma and feeding their souls to the Gauntlet.

Producer Akihito Kadowaki and game director Satoru Nihei emphasized three core aspects of the game: compelling characters (including a new protagonist and enemies), the historically rich setting of Kyoto, and gameplay that is said to be "the ultimate sword-fighting action."

Not much has been shown in terms of gameplay, but the series' history offers clues about potential features. A recurring mechanic is the Issen counterattack, which has taken various forms throughout the series, including some versions capable of instantly killing enemies. Another key element is the Oni Gauntlet, which allows players to absorb Genma souls and use them to enhance weapons and equipment. How these mechanics might be implemented in Way of the Sword, however, remains to be seen.

A specific release date has not been announced, but the 2026 launch window has been reaffirmed. For more on everything we know so far about Onimusha: Way of the Sword, you can visit our dedicated page below!

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny Remaster Coming to Consoles and PC This 2025

In addition to Way of the Sword, Capcom has announced a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samura's Destiny for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, slated for release in 2025. This move aligns with Capcom's stated goal, from a December 2024 press release regarding Way of the Sword and the Okami Sequel, to "further enhance corporate value by leveraging its library of content." Following the 2019 remaster of Onimusha: Warlords, Samura's Destiny's remaster is likely to include visual enhancements, refined controls, and other quality-of-life improvements.

Onimusha 2: Samura's Destiny is set during the late Sengoku period and centers on Jubei Yagyu, a samurai whose village is destroyed by the warlord Nobunaga Oda. Driven by revenge, Jubei's journey sees him teaming up with various allies, each pursuing their own agendas, as he unlocks his latent Oni powers to fight against the Genmas.
