Monster Hunter Wilds is considering a 24 hour extension on their Open Beta Test 2 following the PlayStation outage that occurred this weekend. Read on to find out more about the extension, and the events that unfolded.
Monster Hunter Wilds To Extend Beta Test 2
PS5 Players Could Not Play For 24 Hours
Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds) is considering a one day extension of their Open Beta Test 2 phase due to the PlayStation Network outage that occurred this weekend. The service went offline for 24 hours starting 6 PM EST on February 7th, rendering all online games on the console unplayable, including the Monster Hunter Wilds beta test. PlayStation Network was then restored at around 8 PM EST as per the official NA X (Twitter) support account.
As of writing, the date or time frame for the extension has not been announced, but they have confirmed that it will be a 24-hour extension to make up for the interrupted playtime. This extension could be any time from the end of Beta Test 2 Part 2 to the 27th, a day before the game officially releases. Nevertheless, Part 1 of the Beta Test 2 has concluded, and Part 2 will begin later this week on February 13th, 7 PM PT. Players will be able to jump right back into the fun, and also maybe catch a glimpse of the quirky bug that turns the usually detailed and chiseled characters into hilarious, low-resolution, and low-poly blobs.
The Cursed Low-Poly Bug Returns
Capcom has previously mentioned that the build featured in the beta testing phases are outdated, and therefore do not reflect the status of the game upon its official launch. Therefore, the beta build is riddled with bugs and technical issues, such as the infamous low-poly character glitch caused by textures not loading properly. The glitch turned characters, Palicos, and even titular monsters into strange and blocky versions of their original design.
However, instead of getting angry at these strange oblongs, fans have embraced them in all their nightmarish-ness, sharing on social media their low-poly encounters, with some fans even hoping that Wilds will commemorate its humble, polygonal origins in the future. According to an interview with GamesRadar+, the MH Wilds staff are also aware of this comedic bug, and that they’re happy that players are enjoying its shenanigans—however, they also recommend that players get the full experience with the right specs when the game launches later this month.
Monster Hunter Wilds is the newest entry in the acclaimed Monster Hunter series and is the first mainstream title to have an open-world setting called the Forbidden Lands. Players will step into the shoes of the Hunter, who is tasked with investigating the mysterious unexplored region, and its apex predator, the White Wraith. The highly anticipated action-RPG is set to release on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 28th, 2025.
PlayStation Network’s Largest Outage In Recent Years
In a post on its NA X (Twitter) support account, PlayStation attributed the day-long outage to an "operational issue" and have apologized for the inconvenience caused. Additionally, users with an active PlayStation Plus membership will receive an additional five days of service to their current subscription as compensation.
However, fans were not satisfied with Sony’s lack of communication during the outage, citing widespread panic and worry as it echoed the events of a similar service interruption that occurred last 2011. The 2011 PlayStation Network (PSN) outage was caused by a coordinated hacker attack on its servers, with approximately 77 million user accounts having been compromised. The PSN servers were then down for three and a half weeks from April 20th to May 14th. During this time, Sony made sure to notify users about the events that transpired, as well as the need to conduct a thorough analysis of the incident and identify the full scale of the attack.
