Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Diversity is a Result of Being "As Accurate As Possible"

Warhorse Studios’ Developers Just Wants To Make A Cool Video Game

Warhorse Studios’ developers are fed up with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2) being targeted with recent online backlash, and just want to make a cool video game. In an interview with PC Gamer on February 3, 2025, KCD2’s PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling expressed his thoughts on the game receiving backlash for its increase in diversity.

Stolz-Zwilling explained, "Several years ago, we were branded differently. Now we are branded that way. It seems like someone is always trying to brand us somehow, and we are just trying to make a cool videogame." This came after fans and critics called out the game for including LGBTQ+ content and other things that are considered "woke".

Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner shared the same sentiment and reiterated that the team is not the problem with the latest issue. "We think the extreme voices are just never happy." he said.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s Diversity

KCD2 being set in Kuttenberg opens the game to a much more diverse setting compared to their previous title. Bittner specified, "There's more ethnicities in Kuttenberg because Kuttenberg is the royal mint." Kuttenberg is considered the second most important city in Bohemia being the country’s financial center, thus many people coming from different parts of the world gather in the city, making it much more diverse compared to other places featured so far in the series.

Bittner also mentioned several elements that appear in the game that come from different cultures and ethnicities, such as people from Italy, German people who speak German, a Jewish quarter, and more. He reiterated "I think that it's important to not just include these people, but their vision of the world, which can sometimes feel lacking in games or media that call themselves diverse."

Stolz-Zwilling clarified that nobody from their publisher Plaion or Embracer told Warhorse Studios to include certain agendas for the game, only community feedback affected their approach for KCD2. "Everything makes sense. Everything we put there was double and triple checked."

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Pre-Orders Unaffected By Recent Backlash

Warhorse Studios responded to the recent rumors about players asking for a refund for pre-ordering the game amidst the recent backlash KCD2 received. KCD2 Writer Daniel Vávra explained on a Twitter (X) post that KCD2’s sales-return ratio is the same even with the controversy. He pointed out that KCD2 was not as high on Steam charts a few weeks ago because nine popular games are getting a discount, which also saw Monster Hunter: Wilds pre-order sales dropping.

In January 2025, Vávra was attacked due to KCD2 having queer representation, which sparked online rumors about the game being banned in Saudi Arabia due to unskippable LGBT+ scenes. He denied these rumors and reiterated that "It is a ROLE PLAYING GAME, so it is purely up to the player what decisions they make and for all the decisions they make, they are responsible for the consequences that correspond to the morals and social norms of the time."
