Square Enix Teases Final Fantasy 9 Remake
Fans rejoiced with Square Enix’s latest tweet, seemingly teasing an upcoming project for Final Fantasy 9 (FF9). Square Enix posted on Twitter (X) on April 7 an image that contains the quote "My memories will be part of the sky…"
The quote comes from one of the beloved characters from FF9, the black mage Vivi, at the end of the game. The post has the caption "If you know, you know," with a crying emoji. Although this is not a confirmation nor an official announcement, fans are quick to point this tweet towards a possible remake of the game.
A remake of FF9 has been long requested by fans, being a fan favorite for its timeless appeal and deep emotional connection with its characters. Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi even regards FF9 as his favorite Final Fantasy game. Square Enix has successfully made the remake series for Final Fantasy 7, and with FF9’s popularity and its upcoming 25th anniversary, the game may soon follow suit.
This concept comes from Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida, as he previously mentioned in an interview with Video Games in 2024 on what an FF9 Remake would look like. He stated, "Of course, I do know there are requests for Final Fantasy IX to be made, but when you think about Final Fantasy IX, it’s a game with huge volume."
Yoshida continued, "When you think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title. It’s a difficult one. It is a tough question."
Final Fantasy 9’s 25th Anniversary Website Features New 3D Figures
Square Enix recently launched a new website to commemorate FF9’s 25th anniversary. The website stated that they are preparing various projects to celebrate the title’s anniversary.
This alone sparked rumors regarding a potential remake. However, through some further digging, fans have noticed something new with the figures the website offers.
New Formism Figures for Zidane and Garnet are now available for pre-order on Square Enix’s e-store. But the product descriptions of these figures are what caught people’s attention, as they read "To commemorate the 25th anniversary, the texture of the costume has been reinterpreted and recreated in three dimensions." Many have speculated that this new, modernized, and somewhat altered look of the characters may be what they will look like on the rumored FF9 Remake.
Despite multiple speculations, no official announcement has been made. However, with Square Enix’s latest tweet and FF9’s upcoming 25th anniversary celebration, fans have justified reason to think that a remake may be in the works.
