Elder Scrolls Online Subclasses Come After 11 Long Years of Fans Requesting It

The Elder Scrolls Online finally adds a long-awaited fan-requested feature that adds subclasses to the game. Read on to learn more about how this works and future updates of the game.

Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates

Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines

The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is celebrating its 10th Anniversary, and developer Zenimax Online Studios has a lot lined up for the game. During the recently concluded ESO Direct 2025 on April 10, it was announced that the highly requested feature of subclassing will be arriving soon.

For years, fans have asked for the option to swap classes. Whenever a new skill tree is added, players must start from scratch to obtain the latest content, which is bothersome for an MMO. Fortunately, the developers would be adding subclasses to allow players to mix and match skill lines without having to reroll their characters.

To achieve this, players must reach level 50. Players would retain 1 skill line from their base class, then they would be able to swap out two of their skill lines to any of the other six classes available. This addition opens up to 3000 combinations, allowing players to find their dedicated playstyle.

ESO Game Director Rich Lambert is confident about this new feature, stating that the team has done intensive testing, and despite the expected rise of Power Levels, the developers are "fine with where it is."

Seasons of the Worm Cult

ZeniMax Online will now shift to seasonal content, which Studio Director Matt Firor said would allow them to be more experimental when it comes to releasing content and addressing player concerns.

He explained, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do, but we'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."

ESO’s new chapter will be Seasons of the Worm Cult, a 10-year-in-the-making sequel to the game’s original Molag Bal storyline. This chapter introduces the Isle of Solstice, a new zone where players must investigate the resurgence of the Worm Cult.

Producer Susan Kath clarified that although the Seasons of the Worm Cult would last most of the year, this would not be the case for future seasons. The developers plan to make seasons last for about 3 to 6 months. Zenimax plans to do "remix" seasons where they revisit previous storylines, with them teasing a Dark Brotherhood-themed season coming down the line.

2025 Content Pass and Premium Edition

ESO announced on Twitter (X) on April 11 that there would be a new content pass and premium edition that would include all of the previous and upcoming releases of the game. All versions of the pass will include the following:

On the other hand, the Premium Edition gives players a chance to experience ESO’s previously released Chapters and Classes.

 ● ALL previous Classes (base-game Classes and the Warden, Necromancer, and Arcanist)

With their year-round celebration of their 10th anniversary, ESO looks to expand on its rich history and supportive community. Their plans of revisiting previous storylines would also round out unfinished stories and continue to build upon their deep lore. The Elder Scrolls Online is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
