Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail Is The Game’s Most Ambitious Alliance Raid
Echoes of Vana’diel Project Combines Square Enix’s Two Big MMOs
Final Fantasy 14 (FF14) Dawntrail combined Final Fantasy 11 and 14 with Echoes of Vana’diel to create the most ambitious alliance raid the game has seen. Echoes of Vana’diel (EOV) was first released on November 12, 2024 and is still going with different events and raids. Final Fantasy 14 Lead Battle Content Designer Masaki Nakagawa shared in an interview with Inverse on February 21, 2025 how the team handled the crossover with Final Fantasy 11.
He revealed how both teams collaborated to produce Echoes of Vana’diel, with "The FFXI team primarily supervised the original concept, plot, and in-game text of the scenario, as well as the voices and dialogue of NPCs and boss characters. We also asked them to provide the final assessment in ensuring the overall battle content was consistent with the universes and lore of FFXI and FFXIV, and to check whether there were any concerns about elements that were given an FFXIV-original twist."
Alliance Raids Remain As Crossovers Rather Than Original Stories
Alliance Raids remains one of FF14’s strongest aspects, offering 24-player raids that feature compelling stories and crossovers with popular games. Echoes of Vana’diel continued this trend, and Nakagawa explained why crossovers remain as alliance raids rather than original stories.
He pointed out, "Many of the past Final Fantasy titles have strong sentimental value for both fans and us developers, so we all tend to have high expectations for content based on those games. And when we set out to create something that meets those expectations, the overall content inevitably becomes quite substantial in size." Nakagawa added, "With that in mind, alliance raids allow us to divide the scenario and battle content across three patches and invest sufficient resources to create a hefty amount of content."
However, he wanted to clarify that the team is not fixated on this format, and would like to improve upon it to provide more surprises for the players in the future.
Appealing to Both Final Fantasy 11 and 14 Fans
Creating a crossover for two big titles gives developers the difficult task of appealing to both sides, giving them the satisfaction of highlighting those series and coinciding them appropriately for the collaboration. Nakagawa revealed how the team handled this, with their goal to "draw the attention of those unfamiliar with FFXI and pique their interest in playing the game."
He continued, "To achieve this, we featured the various commonalities between FFXI and FFXIV to make Vana'diel seem more approachable for those who haven't experienced it. We also introduced Alxaar, an adventurer, to tie the two universes together." Nakagawa also mentioned that FF11 was chosen for the EOV project as the game was celebrating its 20th anniversary at the time, and the team knew that there were many FF11 fans in the FF14 community.
He wanted to reiterate how much care they had for both titles and said "However, our fundamental direction remained the same for both projects: we treated the original works with respect and took great care with every aspect we brought over from those titles as we blended them in with the rest of the FFXIV universe."
Nakagawa explained further, "We have a strong desire to treasure the FFXIV universe and the titles we crossover with, so whenever we incorporate an element from another title, we carefully deliberate on which aspects of their lore to incorporate and how the elements of their universe should be integrated with the universe of FFXIV. This I believe will remain true for any other crossovers we may have in the future."
Second Installment of Echoes of Vana’diel Already On The Works
The second part of the raid for EOV is currently under development. Nakagawa confirmed the status of part two of the EOV alliance raid in an interview with Famitsu on February 21, 2025. He stated that a different team will handle the development of the second part of the EOV compared to the first one.
Furthermore, Nakagawa also mentioned, "It's going to be a battle content full of surprises that will be different from the first one, and I'm looking forward to it. It will take some time, but I hope you can look forward to it. And if you are even a little interested in FF11 after playing the first game, I would be very happy if you could play FF11 as well."
Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail was first released on July 2, 2025. Echoes of Vana’diel is a raid series in collaboration with Final Fantasy 11. Check out our Final Fantasy 14 to stay up to date with the latest information about the game.
