Do You Need to Play Suikoden 1 Before Suikoden 2?
Not Required But There Are Perks
Suikoden 2 is set three years after the events of the first game and serves as a sequel, but it's not required to play Suikoden 1 before starting Suikoden 2. Both feature similar mechanics and revolve around recruiting all characters simply known as Stars of Destiny. There are recurring Suikoden 1 characters who are part of Suikoden 2, however, both games feature different protagonists.
While you don't need to play Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster in order, there are certain perks to beating the first game before playing the sequel. For example, you are able to recruit Suikoden 1's Hero in Suikoden 2 when you carry over save data from the first game.Though, do note that this the only way that can be done. You would need to get to the final chapter of Suikoden 1 to transfer data over, so we recommend finishing Suikoden 1 before Suikoden 2.
Playing through the first game would also help you better understand references made in Suikoden 2 as well its new plot and characters, and the series' setting. Moreover, 17 characters from Suikoden 1 can be carried over Suikoden 2. These characters also gain extra EXP upon joining your team in Suikoden 2, extra armor levels, and weapon levels, as well as retain their equipped Runes.
