Black Ops 6 Facing Backlash From Fans
BO6 Expensive Crossover TMNT Skins
Fans are disappointed with Black Ops 6 latest crossover event with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (TMNT) as part of its Season 2 Reloaded event due to skins locked behind an expensive paywall.
The turtles, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello, cost $20 each to be unlocked, while Master Splinter’s skin can be obtained by paying $10 for the Battlepass Premium Track. Adding all of them brings in a grand total of $100, not including the $10 TMNT-themed weapon blueprint (a cosmetic variant of Master Splinter’s weapon).
What made some fans of the game incredibly disappointed is the fact that Black Ops 6 is not a free game. It costs $69.99, and fans had to pay extra cash for skins. Some fans compared Black Ops 6 to similar games like Fortnite. "That is INSANE," Reddit user neverclaimsurv wrote. "In Fortnite I think I paid $25.00 for all 4 turtles, and that’s a free game."
Aside from the game’s price, it is unlikely that Activision will bring the skins from Black Ops 6 to the next installment, meaning players who bought these cosmetic packs won’t get to enjoy them once the company rolls out the new Black Ops game. One Reddit user, SellMeYourSirin, mentioned that "It has everything to do with the fact a full price game (that’s likely gonna be replaced within the next year) has THREE tiers of battle passes." For context, the game’s first tier is free, while the remaining two cost money.
Being the highest-grossing video game in the United States in2024, it is unlikely that Activision will hold back bringing more future paid crossover events to Black Ops 6. However, this trend might change with enough pressure from its fan base.
Black Ops 6’s Mixed Steam Review
Currently sitting at 10,696 Mixed Steam user reviews (only 47% recommend the game), Black Ops 6 is facing a lot of complaints from its players. Aside from expensive skins, players are reporting that their PCs are crashing when playing the game. Meanwhile, others complain about the amount of hackers ruining the multiplayer experience and Activision’s use of AI.
One Steam user, LemonRain, did not recommend the game because "this game has had problems with hard crashing since launch, but the latest update has made it so I can’t complete a single match. Reinstalling. Safe mode. Support. Nothing works and I have given up."
However, some players who luckily did not have their PC crash reported they sometimes encounter hackers who can instantly kill all enemies without even starting the match. One Steam player even mentioned they waited for 15 minutes in a lobby only to be matched with hackers.
Finally, as a protest against Activision’s pivot to AI, some users posted negative reviews and used Chat GPT and other AI chatbots to generate their reviews. Steam user Rundur posted, "Since Activision can't be bothered hiring real people anymore, I've decided to take advantage of AI myself and ask ChatGPT to write this negative review for me. Enjoy."
With all these complaints, Black Ops 6 continues to generate high revenue thanks to its battle passes, which are quite costly compared to other shooter games.
