⚫︎ Despite criticism suggesting Black Myth: Wukong’s success is largely due to China's vast player base, new insights from Game Science co-founder and art director Yang Qi indicate otherwise. Speaking at the West Lake Art Forum at the China Academy of Art, Yang revealed that 30% of the game’s player base comes from outside China—a figure that reportedly surprised the development team. Released in 2024 to strong sales and high review scores on Steam and Metacritic, the action RPG also won the Players’ Voice Award at The Game Awards, establishing itself as a standout title regardless of its origin.

⚫︎ Black Myth: Wukong has been honored with the award for Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction at the D.I.C.E. Awards. Developer Game Science thanked the judges, team members, partners, and players for their support, noting that after a well-earned rest last year, the team is back to work—with a bit of downtime still in the mix.

⚫︎ Game Science has released a surprise short film celebrating the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake. The film features exclusive Black Myth merchandise, including clothing, plush toys, and tote bags from the studio’s official brand. The first batch is now available in Mainland China, with the studio actively seeking global partners to expand distribution and bring the products to international audiences.

⚫︎ Black Myth: Wukong has received a major update, adding two new endgame modes—Return of Rivals and Gauntlet of Legends—unlocked after completing the main game. The modes feature rematches with previous bosses, including some with new moves and adjustable difficulty. Rewards include rare treasures, but challenges are only available if the corresponding enemies were defeated during the main story.

⚫︎ The highly anticipated Chinese action RPG Black Myth: Wukong has taken the gaming world by storm, hitting 1 million players on Steam within just one hour of launch. As of August 19, 2025, its 24-hour peak player count stands at 1,182,305, according to SteamDB.

⚫︎ Over the weekend, reports emerged that a Black Myth: Wukong co-publisher sent streamers and reviewers a Do’s and Don’ts document, restricting discussion of topics like “violence, nudity, feminist propaganda, fetishization,” and other content that could spark “negative discourse.”

The guidelines sparked debate online. One user on X wrote, “It is WILD to me that this actually made it out the door… creators casually signing this and not speaking up is just as wild.” Others, however, saw no issue with the restrictions.
