Mackenyu, popular Japanese actor from Netflix's series adaptation of iconic anime "One Piece," joins the cast of Assassin’s Creed Shadows—Ubisoft's upcoming installment in their flagship RPG series, Assassin's Creed.

Best known for playing Roronoa Zoro in One Piece, Mackenyu has been announced to be the Japanese and English voice actor for Gennojo, a character that players will meet in Ubisoft's Feudal-Japan set video game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. According to Ubisoft, Gennojo is expected to be a key character who "helps the protagonist track and eliminate a crucial target."

"Gennojo is a charming, reckless, and deeply conflicted figure, driven by guilt to dismantle a corrupt system. He’s a flirtatious rogue and a trickster, always walking the line with a mix of wit, deceit, and swagger," Ubisoft further said about Gennojo. "Motivated by a deep desire to bring down a corrupt system, Gennojo is willing to risk everything, even his own life, to achieve his goal. Despite his rough exterior, he holds a strong sense of justice, especially when it comes to helping the poor and elderly."

It's currently unclear as to which point in the game players will meet Gennojo, but it is understood that he will be an important character in the game's missions. According to Mackenyu, Gennojo is a part of a group simply known as the "Shinobi League." He added that you can "basically recruit" Gennojo into your team and have him be a companion of sorts along your journey in the game.

Assassin Creed Shadows Successfully Premieres Kabuki Showcase in Kyoto

Following multiple release delays, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is locking in its release on March 20, 2025. Ubisoft previously stated that the delays happened because they wanted to spend more time making final adjustments to the game and fixing quality issues.

To pick up steam ahead of its release, the Feudal-Japan set Assassin’s Creed Shadows successfully premiered the "Kabuki Showcase in Kyoto," held at Minami-za Kabuki Theatre in Kyoto Prefecture Japan. Fans of the series were invited to the venue to play a portion of the game. The event also featured a painting performance by Yoichi Wakui, who created the sumi-e paintings (traditional ink brush painting) that appear in the game.

Last week, Ubisoft Japan announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows received a CERO Z rating from Japan’s video game rating organization, the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO). As a result, the Japanese version of the game will show censored content, completely removing dismemberment and decapitation, as well as changing depictions of wounds and severed body parts.
