Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION Overview

Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION is a compilation of 14 classic Yu-Gi-Oh! Video games originally released between 1998 and 2005 for platforms such as the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. Developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Konami, this collection launched on February 27, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and PC, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game.

The collection features titles that encompass various settings and narratives aligned with the original anime series, but the core mechanics of many of the collection’s games stand: aim to build a powerful deck, challenge iconic characters across the Duel Monsters Era, and engage in card battles. Notably, several games in the collection are being localized and released outside of Japan for the first time.

Enhancements such as save states, rewind functionality, and button remapping have been integrated to improve the user experience. Additionally, online multiplayer support is available for select titles, with plans to extend this feature to more games post-launch. The game will also include an "enhancements" menu for players to apply special modifiers, including unlocking all cards and removing deck point limits.

Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION Gameplay

Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION comprises 14 classic Yu-Gi-Oh! video games originally released between 1998 and 2004 for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance platforms. These games predate the standardized rules of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game (TCG); therefore, some titles lack features such as effect monsters, and the ability to set spell or trap cards. Consequently, the core card-game mechanics vary between games, and not all include the familiar system where players take turns summoning monsters, activating spells, and setting traps to deplete their opponent's life points.

While the original releases did not support online capabilities, the re-release introduces online play for select titles. Specifically, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 4: Battle of Great Duelists supports online multiplayer at launch, with plans to extend this feature to additional games in future updates.

Additionally, the collection offers quality-of-life enhancements, including save/load functionality, rewind options, and customization features such as unlocking all cards and removing deck capacity limits.

Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION Reviews

Average Draws for Average Hands

Image

Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION received a Metacritic score of 64, indicating mixed or average reviews. Game8, scoring it 64 out of 100, acknowledged the collection’s value in preserving 14 classic Game Boy Yu-Gi-Oh! titles, but criticized the inconsistent quality of the included games. Similarly, Siliconera awarded the game a 7 out of 10, praising genuinely enjoyable titles while noting that some felt like filler.

Noisy Pixel rated the collection 6 out of 10, citing the $50 price point as a significant drawback, despite appreciating the inclusion of comprehensive digital manuals and art. In contrast, TheGamer delivered a more critical assessment, awarding it 2 out of 5. They argued that the collection omitted major titles from the era and, while acknowledging that a few games offered brief entertainment, ultimately deemed it disappointing.
