Mouthwashing Overview

Image

Mouthwashing is a story-driven psychological horror/thriller game developed by Wrong Organ and published by CRITICAL REFLEX. It was released for the PC on Steam on September 26, 2024, and is headed to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch consoles in 2025.

Mouthwashing is about a crew of survivors onboard a stranded space freighter struggling to stay alive while waiting for rescue or ways to prolong their survival. The ship was sabotaged by the captain, Curly, who ended up taking a brunt of the impact’s crash and lost all his limbs in the process, reduced to a mummified living-corpse with only one eye and a need for daily painkillers. Taking care of Curly is the ship’s nurse, Anya, who sought to keep Curly alive in hopes of the crew being rescued and to have the former captain clinically treated. Co-pilot Jimmy, with Curly unable to fulfill his duties, elects himself as leader and takes it upon himself to lead the crew’s decisions and responsibilities. Swansea, the onboard technician, is dismissive of the idea, and retreats often to restore the ship’s Utility Room to access the Cryo Pods and prolong the crew’s survival. Lastly, Daisuke is the plucky intern who was a last minute addition to the crew in hopes to get learning experience under Swansea.

Players will act as both Jimmy and Curly as the narrative events unfold, investigating the ship, talking to crew members, and experiencing the escalating horrors of the Tulpar and its crew.

Mouthwashing Gameplay

Image

Mouthwashing is an interactive first-person story-driven psychological thriller. Players control their character across multiple time periods to explore and investigate the area, speaking to the crew members to gather insights or tasks, collecting and retrieving items for use in the future, or accomplishing responsibilities such as feeding painkillers to the wounded. The majority of the gameplay involves walking around the ship and searching for objects to interact with using the mouse.

Mouthwashing Reviews

Indie Horror Game of 2024

Image

Mouthwashing immediately received positive reviews upon release, where many praised its use of jumping time periods to unfold its mystery narrative over the course of the game. Its use of low-poly character and game models added was deemed charming and a stylistic choice that upped the atmosphere of the horror game.

Our review over here at Game8 praises the game’s use of psychological fears and subtle storytelling to unsettle and disturb players instead of relying on cheap thrills and jumpscared like most horror games tend to do. We explain that even though the playtime is short, the story is an experience that will stay in players’ memories well after.

IGN gave the game an ‘Amazing’ at 9/10, citing it as an uncomfortable but incredibly compelling piece of narrative able to unsettle audiences by just showing the reality of people in their worst moments. TechRadar agrees with a perfect 5/5, mentioning that it’s one of the shortest horror games they’ve ever played, but will definitely retain the experience of the game for a long time due to the nastiness and downright scariness of how the game doesn’t hold back on its themes. Bloody Disgusting ranks it at a 4/5, praising how the game kept them on their toes and properly set up its intriguing storyline and carries it all throughout the game.

Mouthwashing Announcement Trailer

Announcement Trailer

Mouthwashing’s official trailer starts out with the player feeding painkillers to an almost-muffied Curly writing in pain, as his mouth is manually opened to an unnerving sound as Jimmy monologues about pain. It quickly switches to an advert about the titular Dragonbreath mouthwash, contrasting the ominous start of the trailer.

Mouthwashing Trivia

⚫︎ Mouthwashing was supposed to have a sixth crew member, but was ultimately cut due to not being able to incorporate them well into the themes of the overall story.
⚫︎ There was meant to be a dialogue-choice system in the game during the psych evaluation between Curly and Jimmy, but was cut due to time.
⚫︎ Curly’s face pre-crash was meant to never have been revealed, but for narrative purposes during script rewrites, was forced to be added. His model was only added a month before the game’s release.
⚫︎ The developers have revealed the crew’s favorite Pokemon: Curly likes Pikachu, Jimmy loves Mega Rayquaza, Anya adores Glaceon, Swansea prefer Herdier, and Daisuke admires WereGarurumon.
