Lies of P Overview

Lies of P is a souls-like action RPG developed by Neowiz games and Round8 Studio. First debuted in September 2023, the said title presents a dark and gothic reimagining of the Pinocchio story within the backdrop of the Belle Époque-inspired city of Krat. During Sony’s February 2025 State of Play, an expansion, Lies of P: Overture, was announced to be coming this Summer 2025.

Players control P, a puppet on a quest to become human, as he navigates the city of Krat, which has been thrown into chaos by a puppet uprising and the spreading of a mysterious petrification disease. The narrative unfolds as players uncover the origins of these crises while making choices that influence the story’s outcome.

Combat in Lies of P follows the formula associated with the Souls-like genre, such as Elden Ring and Bloodborne. Players can choose from various melee weapons, such as swords, axes, and maces, each with distinct characteristics. Legion Arms add versatility by allowing P to equip different mechanical arms with unique abilities, such as ranged attacks or defensive utilities.

Lies of P Gameplay

Lies of P incorporates gameplay mechanics reminiscent of the Soulsborne genre and the Lie System. This morality system tracks player choices related to truth and lies, which will then influence how P develops as a character further down the road.

Weapon customization is a key element, with weapons disassembled into blades and handles. Blades determine damage type and elemental properties, while handles dictate movesets and scaling. Each component possesses a Fable Art, analogous to weapon skills in other RPGs. Moreover, attached to P’s left arm is the Legion Arm, which functions as his offhand weapon or tool. These can perform all kinds of functions, from grabbing enemies from a distance to setting timed explosives on the ground.

Combat mechanics also include a system comparable to Bloodborne’s Rally, where players can recover a part of their lost health by damaging enemies immediately after getting hit.

Lies of P has garnered generally positive reviews, reflected in its 80 out of 100 Metacritic score. Some critics frequently highlight the game’s polished presentation and solid execution of its Souls-like mechanics. Game8 awarded it an 84/100, praising Lies of P as potentially the best Soulsborne title of 2023, while acknowledging its adherence to established genre conventions as drawbacks.

The Guardian, scoring it 4 out of 5 stars, echoed this sentiment, noting the game’s close resemblance to its Soulsborne predecessors but commending its successful implementation of core gameplay elements. In contrast, VG247 was less impressed, giving it 2 out of 5 stars. Their review cited a lack of polish the "stir" of other genre entries, though they did appreciate the game’s thematic and conceptual ambitions.

Player reception on Metacritic is also largely positive, with an 8.3/10 user score. Many players celebrate the game’s blend of Bloodborne and Sekiro influences, while others perceive this amalgamation as a weakness, criticizing the perceived over-reliance on familiar mechanics.
