⚫︎ Kirby Air Riders is a Switch 2 racing game from Masahiro Sakurai (The Verge)

Kirby Air Riders Overview

Kirby Air Riders is an upcoming racing game for the Nintendo Switch 2. It serves as the sequel to the 2003 GameCube title, Kirby Air Ride. Directed by Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. franchises, this installments marks his return to the series after more than two decades. The game is scheduled for release in 2025, following the launch of the Switch 2 on June 5th.

The game is expected to build upon its predecessor’s gameplay elements by offering players the opportunity to race through various courses. Players control Kirby and other characters in the series and utilize unique vehicles to navigate tracks filled with obstacles and power-ups. The main objective is to outpace opponents while using Kirby’s signature ability to absorb enemies’ powers. The teaser trailer shown during the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct for April 2025 suggests that the new game will support four-player local co-op like its predecessor.

Kirby Air Riders Gameplay

Image

Despite its appearance in the April 2025 Nintendo Direct, the teaser trailer for Kirby Air Riders on the Switch 2 offered little concrete gameplay information. It is, however, expected to retain the gameplay elements of the 2003 GameCube title, Kirby Air Ride. In the original game, players controlled Kirby or other characters (like Meta Knight and King Dedede) as they automatically accelerated through various courses. The focus here is on steering and utilizing abilities.

The aforementioned GameCube title had a simple default control scheme where the A button was used for breaking, charging boosts, and inhaling enemies to copy their abilities, while the control stick handled steering. However, it is presently unknown whether Kirby Air Ride will implement a comparable control scheme or incorporate more advanced controls.
