Pokémon Legends: Z-A Gameplay

Iterates Over the Realtime Battles of Legends Arceus

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is an open-world adventure RPG predecessor that brings over numerous mechanics from its predecessor, Pokemon Legends Arceus. It will feature open-world gameplay where players will be able to spot wild Pokemon out and about, contary to invisibly encountering them through random encounters in mainline games. Battles will be on a real-time basis within open areas that will allow the trainers and their Pokemon to move about the battlefield, executing close-range and projectile moves from afar to hit opposing Pokemon.

It has yet to be confirmed if the game will include the ability to craft Poké Balls, the lure mechanic, the ability to employ agile and strong styles, the capability to ride Pokémon on the field, and the possibility of encountering Frenzied Pokémon will be implemented over from the aforementioned Pokemon Legends Arceus.

Spot Wild Pokemon in Wild Zones!

As the game will be set within the city limits of Lumiose, there will be designated Wild Zones scattered across the city where Pokemon will be able to roam free. Players approach any wild Pokemon they wish and attempt to catch them by throwing Pokeballs. Trainers can raise their chances of capture by bringing out their own companion Pokemon to battle and weaken the wild ones.

Mega-Evolutions Make a Mega Return!

Additionally, Mega Evolution has been teased as a returning mechanic. Trainers can make certain Pokemon hold onto their respective Mega Stones, and when paired with their own Trainer Key Stone bracelets, will allow the Pokemon to undergo Mega Evolutions during battle in real time. Mega Evolving will drastically transform the Pokemon's appearances, as well as boost stats, change abilities, and even alter types.

Climb Up the Ranks in Z-A Royale!

Trainers can enter the Z-A Royale, a tournament where you rank up through unique real-time Pokémon battles. If another trainer spots you, they’ll head straight for a battle—but you can also sneak up on unsuspecting opponents and strike from behind to gain the upper hand.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Story

Image

Pokemon Legends: Z-A will star new Pokemon trainers as they arrive to the transforming city of Lumiose. The metropolis is currently undergoing a major reconstruction in order to provide a harmonious environment wherein humans and Pokemon can live together seamlessly. The company leading the renovations are headed by Quasartico Inc., headed by its CEO Jett, and her secretary Vinnie. Players will travel through the bustling city alongside their new friend and potential rival Urbain(M) or Taunie(F).

It has yet to be outright confirmed during what timeline Z-A will take place in the Kalos region's history, but the game's latest trailer confirms the appearance of the mysterious AZ, who looks to be the frontman of the hotel players will be staying. AZ is also accompanied by their partner Floette. The appearance of the two bring into question if Z-A takes place in the past, the future, or in an alternate timeline, due the conflicting events and technology in XY and Z-A's trailers.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Setting

The game has been announced to take place entirely within the sprawling cityscape of Lumiose City, the centerpiece of the Kalos region. However, time will tell if the game will eventually let players explore other areas of Kalos outside of Lumiose City as well.
