PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY Overview
Patapon and Patapon 2 were popular Sony-exclusive action rhythm games initially released for the PSP in 2007 and 2011, respectively. They remained exclusive to Sony's ecosystem for a long time, with both receiving remastered versions for the PS4 during 2017 and 2020. During the March 2025 Nintendo Direct, however, it was announced that both Patapon games will receive another remaster as the bundled title PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY for the Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC.
The Patapon series is a unique combination of rhythm gameplay and strategy where players take command of various "Patapons" that can move forward, attack, defend and retreat by using a sequence of drum beats. The story follows the Patapon tribe on their quest to reach Earthend and behold the mysterious IT.
Along the way, they face formidable beasts and clash with the rival Zigoton tribe, who stand in their way.
PATAPON 1+2 REPLAY Gameplay
Patapon is a unique fusion of rhythm-based gameplay and real-time strategy, where players lead a tribe of tiny, one-eyed warriors using drumbeats. By tapping out specific four-beat patterns comprised of Pata(←), Pon(→), Don(↓), and Chaka(↑), players issue commands such as marching, attacking, and defending, all of which must be executed in sync with the game’s beat. Keeping the rhythm consistent isn’t just for show—it directly impacts combat effectiveness, with perfectly timed sequences boosting the Patapons’ morale and power until they get into a Fever.
There also exists an extremely powerful unit, the Hero Patapon, who is capable of executing special abilities that can singlehandedly change the tide of battle. The remaster also promises more quality of life improvements, higher resultion graphics, and other upgrades from the originals.
